I think there's multiple schools of thought (of course, why is sleep so confusing?) and it depends on your baby and why they were waking at night.

We didn't do CIO for night wakings and she dropped them on her own pretty quickly once she learnt to fall asleep on her own, but she'd been waking because her paci was falling out and it just took popping it back in (every hour and a half, don't miss that at all!) and she'd fall asleep again. As soon as she learnt to fall asleep without a swaddle and put a wubbanub back in herself she stopped calling for us. She occasionally wakes for a 3am feed now but mostly sleeps until 5.30am/6am.

She still wakes up when she's teething or working on a milestone and we don't CIO in those situations because she goes back to sleeping pretty well as soon as she's through it.

Hope you get some better sleep tonight!

I have no clue about any of this stuff--we do one thing that I am sure will cause a bad night and he sleeps like a champ, then anther night I am sure it will be a good one and he is up constantly. So, I am just sending hugs, coffee and a smoothie from Life Alive.

@jojogirl. um, she did last night. It's hard to say. She's STTN 6 times the past month. I'll let you know in a week if it sticks.

The first night, she woke up like three or four times. DH fed her around 3am. That's usually her norm. Second night, she woke for a 3am feed again. Last night, nothing. *shrug*. I did feed her at 6am. She only gets 2 oz....I'm getting close to diluting her bottles like Troublesome Tots recommended.

I don't know if it will always fix her food wakings but the other, erroneous wake ups seem to be gone. We'll see after tonight/this weekend :). You know i'll keep you in the loop

We totally did CIO for wake ups (provided they weren't for food). LO had to learn that she COULD sleep on her tummy and how put herself to sleep on her stomach, too. Kind of a double whammy. It's worked beautifully for us so far. And I found that going in to soothe or help her was....not helpful.

We did CIO all night from bedtime until 3 am or so which was the last time she would wake up before her 7 am wakeup fir the day. we did a dream feed around midnight to make sure she had enough milk overnight. We also tried to make sure she had a full feed just before bed too. Didn't want her waking for food if we could help it!

@Rubies: She's been pretty consistent at only waking up 1-2x/night to eat since she was around 12 weeks old... nights like last night are very unusual. Now that she's almost 5 months I feel okay with letting her CIO the wakings I know she isn't hungry. Night weaning off feedings is a different story :) Nugget is only 10% for weight so I assume we can't do that for a while.

When we sleep-trained, I let DD work it out/CIO on her own EXCEPT for the around-midnight wakeup and the 4am wakeup - both times I went and fed her. Within a few days, she only woke/cried at those times (so, twice a night from 3.5 months through until 8 months) and those were the times I went to get her. When I sleep-trained, my goal wasn't to get her to sleep 12+ hours in a row...I just needed her to learn how to put herself to sleep and to get longer stretches of sleep at a time.

@Smurfette: Okay good to know. I feel comfortable doing it if she gets up super early like 11:30pm when I KNOW she's not hungry. 2 is my 'magical' time too when I'm not so sure.

We let her CIO during the night. I gave told myself I wasn't going to feed till after 2 and I didn't. Then after nursing, put her in the crib and she CIO'd till she went back to sleep. She was sleep trained within a couple days.
We recently had to resleep train cause she got use to waking up and us getting her due to teething. Her pedi said that she didn't need to eat overnight, especially since she was sleeping through the night. So we had rough 3 nights, we let her CIO during all wake ups. She is now sleeping all night, and is a much happier baby.

In all of my research, sleep consultations, etc, I understand baby sleep is "easiest" at the beginning of the night, and "hardest" the last third of the night (4am-7am).

What I think I've read is things like CIO are best for bedtime to teach baby to fall asleep on their own, but should NOT be used at all for say a 4:30am waking, since babies need a ton of help falling back asleep at that time of day.

So here's my question: what about other non-feeding wakings? LO decided to grace me with her presence last night at 11:30, 1:30, 3, 4:30 and then was up for the day. She only ate at 3 and at 5.

We've been "sleep training" for bedtime for over a week in the sense that I just put her down totally awake and let her work it out - she's been falling asleep with some fussing, a little crying, finds her thumb, and has never taken more than 20 mins to be out cold.

For say the 11:30 and 1:30am wakings, can we let her CIO (or whatever)? How does this work?

Please send coffee.
