@kitty: yes it's been used at least 10 days a year and just failed on us after 12 years. So it's like a dollar a use. So comfortable. We use it for guests and camping.

@catgirl: ooh I will definitely look into a plush mattress cover, I think that will help a lot. New pillows wouldn't hurt either!

@snowjewelz: luckily it is a room in itself and down the end of a hallway so at least it has relative privacy but I love your screen idea for future arrangements.

@youboots: I might look into getting an aerobed, are they pretty durable? I don't want to fork out more cash for something that is going to leak again.

@Mrs. Lemon-Lime: I will look into putting out some different blankets, good idea!

Similar to Catgirl...Hallway nightlight, Wi-FI password, tour of kitchen so they know where glasses are kept.

We use a high off the ground air bed for extra, extra guests. I try to give a couple of blanket options with different weights, fluffiness to them. When there's less guests that is easier to accomplish. A decent pillow helps with accommodations perception.

As for making any room more comfortable, we place an easily accessible power strip out for easy charging, have our wifi network and password written down, have a basket of snacks and bottled water available, leave a night light in the hallway to lead to the bathroom, and try to leave our living room at a reasonable time in the evening and not enter too early in the morning.

Is it a room in itself? If not I would try to get those accordian/folding screen things to put up so they can have some privacy. Maybe make sure you guys have everything you need upstairs to minimize the need to come downstairs. White noise for you or them. A station with water/snacks so they don't have to feel weird rummaging through your kitchen. A note on how to operate TV, wifi password, etc?

We have a few different options - a twin air mattress, a queen air mattress, two LL bean cots, and our actual sofa. If it's just one person staying they typically just use the sofa. For two people it really depends on their preference. We do have plush mattress covers for the air mattresses and the cots. We also tried to buy nice pillows and sheets.

When the cot has the cushy mattress cover on it and is made up like a bed, it is actually pretty comfortable. I wish we had a guest room but it's just not possible right now. Thankfully it's really only our parents that come and they are pretty easy going and flexible.

If you don't have a guest room and no sofa bed, what do you offer house guests to sleep on? We have an air mattress but it has developed a slow leak and I'm looking for a better option if there is one. I would also appreciate any other tips for making guests comfortable sleeping in the family room!
