@starchild @shopoholicmom yes, 2 good FB groups are Elim Diets for Dairy Queens and MSPI and Reflux Mamas. Take some stuff w/a grain of salt (of course) but it's a good place to get recipe ideas, snack ideas, etc.

@starchild hang in there - we went through hell w/my first son, he had so many things he couldn't tolerate and nightmare reflux that nothing fixed and a ped GI was a godsend. He is 2.5 now and can eat basically everything. It gets better!

We had to switch to formula but just hugs and solidarity. We're still not at baseline and waiting on a ped GI referral. It's so so hard. There are some great FB groups for ideas, too.

@Shopoholicmom: My snack was spreading roasted red pepper hummus on deli meat and rolling it up. Also raisins. There was also one brand of digestive cookies that had no dairy or soy. As for eating out, there were lots of places where I could find one meal. And then that was the meal I had every time. But it was easier to just not eat out and eventually I got used to it. Good luck!

@MrsSRS: I'd forgotton about Lara bars. I'll have to stock up. I'll also need to go check out Aldi for the Enjoy life knock off...we buy a lot of Enjoy Life products but they are pricey!

@Anagram: found your thread and it's awesome! I'm looking forward to checking out if these products are still safe. Thanks for pointing me there.

My go to snacks were Lara bars (or the apple pie flavor knock off from aldi), banana chips dipped in nut butter, carrots and celery sticks dipped in nut butter, broccoli and cucumber and bell peppers with hummus, avocados, guac and carrots or corn chips, and the occasional coconut yogurt.

Thank you all for the great suggestions! I am currently avoiding soy lecithin (so oreos and many breads are out) but allowing soybean oil sparingly. I'm really not sure how severe her intolerance is since I cut out dairy and soy pretty early (at 5 weeks) and have been too nervous to reintroduce.

@MrsADS: Adding that pizza to my next grocery order!
@Dahlia: Those ice cream bars too!
@Anagram: I will check it out! I did recently have a cheese-less Papa Johns pizza and it was the best (you know, other than the cheese version... )
@Pollywog: I will look for those bars and TJs and yes to Chipotle!

I'll have to see what I can find out about Thai curries because I do really love Thai! And I foresee a bun-less Five Guys burger in my near future

@anagram @shopaholicmom the Papa John's crust has soybean oil - just be aware, you may or may not be able to eat that. If I could have eaten soy oil/lecithin, my life would have been soooo much better.

Amy's makes a frozen dairy free/soy free roasted vegetable pizza that is REALLY good, I ate it all the time. You can top with some shredded Daiya cheese and safe meat if you want to amp it up a little. Daiya also makes their own frozen pizza which is very allergy friendly but not as good (it's gluten free).

Also, Papa Johns is the only commercial pizza chain I could find that had dairy free meats and crust. So sometimes I would order a pizza and get half with no cheese (so just crust, sauce, and the toppings), and it was actually pretty good! Their chicken has soy, but the sausages and hamburger are dairy and soy free (or used to be).

I did the MSPI diet for a long time, for both kids. I started a whole thread here a long time ago, if you want to search it--the great thing is, being dairy free has become so common that there are a lot more foods than there used to be.

There are some types of store bought bread that are dairy and soy free, there are plenty of cracker/snacks that are dairy free--there's Bare Naked granola that has a couple flavors that are dairy and soy free (I think the vanilla one) that I used to snack on.

I did the MSPI diet for 16 months (and not just dairy and soy, a bunch of other stuff too) so unfortunately I'm very familiar. I'm 30 weeks pregnant with #2 right now and today is my first day dairy/soy free in preparation for #2 (anticipating he will have it too). So... I know how much it sucks!!

Protein/filling snacks
- Safe bread with peanut/almond butter (Aldi makes a sprouted grain bread that is df/sf, Udi's GF bread is safe, there are others), add jelly/honey (I ate A LOT of sunbutter sandwiches)
- Hard boiled eggs or egg salad sandwich (if eggs are ok with you)
- MEAT - I ate a lot more meat. So, rolled up safe lunch meat, lunch meat sandwiches, I cooked turkey burgers and kept them in the freezer and just ate one of those for a snack.
- Anything avocado (corn chips and guacamole)
- safe cereal and safe milk (almond, rice, etc)
- Oatmeal w/Earth Balance soy free butter and cinnamon, sugar
- some b-fast sausages are safe, check labels.
- A lot of fruit snacks and gummy candy (gummy bears), etc. are safe! NB: twizzlers and oreos have soy.
- Enjoy Life brand allergy-friendly cookies, bars, and chocolate (Aldi makes a knock-off called "live Gfree" that is like a third of the price)

As for eating out/take-out, I think it depends on how severe your LO's sensitivity is. If you're talking about a little bit of mucus in the stool or something, I would probably be okay with some risk of cross-contamination. My son was extremely sensitive and we would end up in the ER. I had some bad experiences at supposedly safe places, so unfortunately I ate out/did take out VERY rarely. There is always a risk of contamination. I basically didn't eat anything I didn't prepare myself or watch being prepared - even people I love (my mom, etc) who mean well just didn't *know*.

Edit: some of this may depend on the degree of soy sensitivity you are dealing with. A lot of MSPI babies can tolerate soybean oil and soy lecithin. In that case, you have a lot more options. My son couldn't, so I had to be very strict.

Chipotle and Panera have some safe options but I would ask them to change gloves and tell them it was an allergy. And even that, I didn't do until my son was a lot older.

Kirkland makes a chocolate/nut bar that is MSPI friendly (it *may* contain soy lecithin? But from my research, that’s not something you typically need to avoid for an MSPI diet)

Eating out was hard at first, but I got used to it quickly. I would just google an allergen menu before we went somewhere—after awhile I could figure out what would be safe vs not even if the restaurant didn’t have an allergen menus.

Oreos and twizzlers are also legit, for the record 😂

No advice on the takeout, but the one thing that got me through months of a very restrictive diet were these coconut ice cream bars: https://coconutbliss.com/bliss/salted-caramel-chocolate-bars

I needed some way to feel like I was treating myself and these are really really good!

Chipotle, Roti, 5 guys, and Qdoba were my staples for eating out with MSPI. I also had a ton of luck at mom and pop places that make everything from scratch. They could guide me to what was safe (steak and French fries was my staple). Also a ton of Thai curry is safe . It's a tough diet when eating out. I'm dreading starting it again with #2 in a few weeks.

For snacks, Trader Joe's has a bunch of options. I believe their PBJ bars are safe. I also ate almond milk yogurt in smoothies, a lot of almond butter toast, and chips and guac. A lot of my snacks were cheerios, cashews, and craisins. Eggs would be another thing to try.

It's not healthy, but Ben and Jerry's makes a fantastic MSPI friendly ice cream.

I’m not sure if this would work,, but there’s a ton of resources for Whole30 on Instagram, Pinterest, etc. Snack ideas, eating out tips, etc. Anything Whole30 would automatically cut out dairy and soy.

What are your go to protein packed snacks? I do ok preparing the main meals but I really struggle to find snacks that are healthy and filling. I don't love snacking on raw nuts but can do nut butters. Before starting the diet, my go to snacks were yogurt and cheese. Obviously those are now out.

Also, I miss eating out. Like, really miss it. I love takeout! But now it just seems like too much work researching allergen menus (or relying on the chef to prepare something soy/dairy free). Anyone have tips for the occasional takeout or recommendations for their favorite takeout while sticking to the MSPI diet?
