I love my RS. It's taken me through 2 weeks until 1 year now and I couldn't imagine life without it. It's perfect for running in and out of places and nursing in public as well.

I also love my Mei Tai too, but that's more for longer trips like full on grocery shopping or something

I don't use a ring sling, I just use an adjustable sling (with no ring), and use the hip carry all the time. A sling is so comfy and so easy; it's just a tube of fabric that you fold in half the long way (I.e., "hotdog" way, or "into itself"). No weird longass fabric pieces like some carriers, no ribbons, cords, straps, clips, etc. Just a tube you fold in half, haha, easy peasy :)

Not to be stalkerish, but I have several slings I don't use anymore (I went a little bananas at the consignment shop) that I would love to pass on to someone who could use them. They are too big for me/LO since I finally lost some baby weight; I'm now 5'3" and about 135. If you think they might fit you or you want to give them a try, id be happy to send them your way!

@Weagle: that is such a neat idea with the rental. I wish so much I still lived in Kansas City - there was a babywearing group that had a rental library that was free :( thanks!

@Mrs. Twine: @arden @Mrs. Pen: thanks for the input!!

I also prefer no padding (maybe I get 80s scary-shoulderpad-Dynasty-flashbacks?), and I don't like the pockets. I have a Comfy Joey. I second trying some because there is no "right" answer and you might love something I don't even like.

Ring slings are easy, and Maya Wrap rocks. I want one. I've used it before with nanny kids, and I love it. I'm getting one ASAP.

Oh, check out PaxBaby and try a few! Different slings have different features, like padded rails, padded shoulders (a la @Mrs. Pen: ), pockets on the tails... I prefer no padding and a short tail with no pocket, but I have a friend that wouldn't wear hers without having all of it!

@scg00387: I have a maya rs and love it! The metal rings you don't feel at all, they are pretty essential! Also be sure to buy a sling with a padded shoulder. I think you'll like it!

I would go with a ring sling based on what you've described as your needs. A pouch sling would be easier to use yet, but I would never buy one of those without trying it first because of adjustability issues.

@scg00387: The way it is pleated and sewn makes it wrap around your shoulder as opposed to sitting on top of your shoulder and pulling on your neck. It's super comfortable and supportive.

@scg00387: You can do a hip carry in a beco gemini too. I'm not sure if that's more or less effort to put on.

@Weagle: Ok one more question and I'll stop pestering you, I swear! What is the type of shoulder that is special about hers (and why is it desirable?). That is a good point about adjustable - DH has grooved on using the Ergo so maybe he'd be down with this as well.... he is a foot taller than me.

@scg00387: Haha... It is a bit overwhelming. But she has a patent on a specific type of shoulder that I wanted. I haven't used any of the Velcro type. The tail is useful for shade, nursing, you can tuck it under the top rail to support floppy newborn and sleeping heads, and having the tail means it's almost infinitely adjustable. I prefer a shorter tail, but some people like really long ones... I guess for looks?

@Weagle: WOW her site is overwhelming! Did you try any of the non-ring-slings that are just velcro?? Is there an advantage to the ring sling part/tail??

With ring slings, sizing doesn't really matter. The rings don't hurt at all. You can't feel them. We LOVE our RS! It's a linen sling from Sleeping Baby Productions. It's been our go-to since LO was about 10 months old. She prefers to be on my hip than facing my chest. It's supper "poppable," and easy to pack.

I have searched old topics, read on a few websites, but STILL feel like I don't "get" the differences between sling options. My brain feels like swiss cheese.

I want something simple to throw him on my hip when I run in to a garage sale or something quick, especially now that it is hot.

I don't have any local stores that carry anything to try on. Maya wraps are on Amazon with free returns but the metal ring intimidates me - wouldn't that hurt?

I'd love to buy something second hand instead but am nervous about fit (obviously)

Any tips??
