Did you change the brand of cat litter you use?

Simple, but this happened to my sister - she didn't realize Her husband bought a different brand and they went back.

Or - you may want to have the cat checked out at the vet - something could be wrong and that is his/her way of telling you.

One of our cats is a pee-er. Like Mrs. Bee said, you have to get the odor out from where they peed. Use a black light if you can't find where it is, clean hard surfaces and anything that can't be washed with an enzyme cleaner (we like anti-icky-poo), and add vinegar to the wash for anything washable. If they can still smell it, they will go back to it. If you can, put a litterbox in the room(s) they are peeing, and keep them as clean as you can. If this works you can eventually start to move the boxes closer to where you want them to be rather than having them everywhere. Ultimately what really helped us in addition to the rest was putting our girl on prozac, part of her issue was feeling bullied by our boy cat and it decreased her anxiety. Good luck, I know how frustrating this can be!

@Mrs. Superhero: so, I don't mean to be a Debbie downer on nature's miracle but, after having problem -child pets, I've learned it's really just an expensive thing that doesn't work. I have never been through what you're going through, minus the baby. Clover started peeing and we had no clue why. No uti (definitely get that checked). Here's what we did to try to combat it:
-we bought more litter pans. We put one in every room where she was peeing.
-if there was a room we didn't want the pan in, we shut the door. She hated us for it but learned to live with it.
-separated her food and water from the other cat. Gave her a "safe" place to be. Also put a litter pan in there so only she could use it.

Im so sorry you're having to deal with this. She may be acting out because of the guests and she may be scared that things are changing and doesn't know what to do.

If changes you make to help her don't help, my suggestion is talking to the vet about it. One of the dogs we have now pees in the house. It's going to sound crazy but after 4 years of dealing with it, we put her on prozak for dogs. It has helped immensely!! She hasn't peed on our carpet or sofas since she went on it.

I hope you can figure it out. I feel your pain and know there is not much more frustrating than dealing with animals misbehaving while you have a ton of other things you are dealing with!!

PS... Mrs. Superhero. Love it. :-)

@Mrs. Superhero: nature's miracle is available at every pet store and online at wag.com, amazon, etc. it is not expensive.

cats will continue to pee in the same spot because you need a special cleaner that removes all the scent like nature's miracle. regular household cleaners will not get out the scent.

putting double sided tape when your daughter is not sleeping may deter your cat from jumping on there if she touches the tape once or twice, and she may stay away. can you keep the door to your daughter's door closed? spray some water at the cat any time you see her near the bed?

First off, he has now peed five times on my daughter's bed (not a crib, and sadly a real mattress not a crib mattress). So I got to quick do laundry and clean the mattress before bedtime. yay!

Thanks for the tips!

@jennylynn: His litter box is fine and he's not doing it every time, just at random. Sadly I don't have anywhere I can lock him in, it's a tiny old house and even the bathroom doesn't have a proper latching door (it has a hook and eye lock).

@Nskillet: I haven't yet caught him doing it :( but maybe I will find a can and try lurking around until I do!

@Mrs. Bee: Do you get nature's miracle at a pet store? Is it expensive? I laughed thinking of putting tape on the bed, I'd have a curly haired toddler running around covered in tape!

i know this problem all too well, which is why we always have waterproof mattress pads on all our mattresses. i don't know if you can really get everything out once it's in the mattress. i use a combination of nature's miracle to get everything out, and then bac-out to get it smelling clean.

as far as preventative measures, jennylynn has good advice. you could also put double sided tape where you don't want them to be.

good luck! i know it sucks!

we had this problem with our cat once, except he was peeing in our laundry basket. We first took him to the vet to be sure it wasn't a UTI since that sometimes causes them to avoid there box and seek softer areas. After that was ruled out, we figured it was a behavior problem. Have you changed litter, or box location? Are you keeping the box super clean? Cats are very picky! To fix our problem, we put him in a small room with only his food, water, and box. We were told not to interact with him at all, and to only go in there to check his food etc. After a few days, when we saw he was consistently using only his box, we let him out for small periods each day while supervised. We eventually let him out longer and longer, and it fixed our problem! We also bought him 2 brand new boxes, instead of the one older one so it'd have a fresh new smell, and he have a choice of which box he wanted to use. It was hard to ignore him, and we felt really bad but it worked!

As for keeping him out of the crib, I read if you put balloons in there, when they jump in they will burst and scare the cat from doing it again. I have no tips on the smell. Sorry. Other than I know it's really important to get it out as much as possible so they don't smell the old urine and start going there agian.

We can train our cats. Coins in a soda can which we shake and say no for negative reinforcement- they hate the noise. We did this to train our cats that LOs crib is off limits. They each went in once, one can shake and never again.

OMG, I don't know. I was thinking about suggesting that spray that keeps pets off furniture but I don't know if that is safe for the baby.

My friend has a cat and she doesn't like her cat on the kitchen counter. She has this thing that sprays a puff of air at the cat when she gets on the counter. I wonder if something like that would work.

Maybe use that for the mattress and the spray for the other furniture.

So I have a cat. His name is Finnegan. I love him very much. He is two years old and has always been a fantastic cat. Uses the litterbox, uses the scratching post, great.

Three weeks ago we went to my parents for 5 days (which we do often, every month or two) and left him with enough food and water and everything. He decided he was mad at us and used the basement futon for a littlebox the whole time we were gone.

Then my inlaws came for three weeks (two days after we got back) and he keeps trying to escape the house. Because we have so many people coming in and out, he was getting out all the time so we started shutting the entryway doors and letting him upstairs or downstairs but not just hanging around in the entryway. Well I was just changing my toddlers sheets because they smelled funny, and I'm pretty sure he peed on her bed FOUR TIMES.

I am going crazy! I do not need this on top of a toddler and a baby and my inlaws in the house.

Any advice? I know he's pissed off, and they will be gone Monday, but how do I stop this before it becomes a habit. Also, how do I get the smell out of her mattress?

Please? Anyone?
