Thanks to those who offered suggestions! Wanted to follow up in case others have a similar issue. I finally went to my pediatrician just because it seemed like something was up. They tested his stool and there were trace amounts of blood (I couldn't see it), so the doctor said it is most likely a milk protein intolerance. Apparently dairy can take up to 2 weeks to leave your system. Both of us were so miserable that we decided to put him on Nutramigen formula temporarily. I went off dairy and pumped in the meantime. We saw a significant improvement in his fussiness. After about 10 days I started slowly reintroducing breastfeeding and now we are back to EBF and he is doing really well.

Unfortunately his sleep is not great, but I think part of that could be because we were holding him for basically all naps and a lot of nighttime sleep in the week or two leading up to the diagnosis. We are working on getting him more comfortable back in his bassinet and the past few nights have been decent stretches (nothing amazing but 3-4 hours at a time).

Good luck to anyone else with similar issues!

That sounds way too familiar, though it hit is a little later- on and off from 8 weeks to 11 I guess. It's awful when they are in pain and you can't fix it, then you think it's something in your milk and you just feel awful like you are the one hurting them- which you are NOT bit I know it's how I felt. Those were the only times I considered giving up on breastfeeding, only I knew formula would probably upset her stomach even more.

We did gas drops with every big feeding )usually in between sides) and they seemed to help, as well as gripe water if she still seemed uncomfortable. We also made a point to hold her upright after eating instead of laying her down to sleep right away. Burp her a lot. Pump her legs throughout the day- I'd bicycle them after every diaper change. Sometimes when she was really fussy we'd lay her across our thighs and kind of pound rhythmically on her back- she needed a pretty strong "pat" to be soothed and I think the pressure on her tummy helped.

I think the biggest thing was time though- she was like that on and off for weeks, and you can see my frantic posts (I got lots of good advice on the one titled What is wrong with my baby?). But for the last week she hasn't done it once. I did cut dairy for a week, then we had to give her frozen milk from when I had dairy and it didn't bother her.

Good luck. I know its really hard right now!!

i feel your pain. our baby had similar issues as a newborn. we tried bicycling legs, tummy massage, gripe water, gas drops, probiotics, bouncing up and down, putting the mattress on an incline...nothing magically fixed the problem, but i like to think that they helped. i may be fooling myself. in hindsight i do think it was just that LO's little digestive system had to mature, but man, it is tough going through it and seeing them in so much discomfort. much hugs to you, i've been there.

@lakeviewmama17: Hi! my LO is 5wks old too and has suffered from excessive gas at times. What I do, which seems to work, is to bicycle her legs for a couple of minutes at every nappy change and also to make sure I continue to burp her thoroughly after each feed (apart from at night when she doesn't seem to need it) and keep her upright for a while until she appears more comfortable.

definitely gas drops and/or gripe water! you can give them to him before you nurse and before bed to see if that helps! maybe a warm bath while gently massaging his tummy before bed?

Oops - didn't read your post carefully enough! Sorry! Sounds like you are already trying everything :( You're approaching the peak of fussiness (6 weeks) so it could just get better with time. Have you tried bicycling her legs, etc to help move along the gas? Gripe water?

Hi. I have a healthy, big 5-week old (12 pounds) who is wakes every ~45 minutes through the night crying. He seems like he really is in pain. The crying often is followed by a bowel movement or a lot of gas. I'm sleep derived and also concerned about him. Our pediatrician suggests it all is normal, but I am losing my mind a bit. He's not hungry when he wakes (sometimes I try feeding him, but he pretty consistently is only interested in eating every 3-4 hours at night). He is exclusively breastfed. So far I have gone off dairy (for 2 weeks), tried Gerber Soothe Probiotics (but it has only been 4 days of that, haven't noticed much difference), and I just purchased some Little Tummies gas drops.

Wondering if anyone else had this type of issue with their baby, and how they helped to solve. I'm not interested in CIO or anything, he is way too young. And like I said, he really seems to be in pain. When he wakes up crying I can soothe him with a pacifier (but that is unlikely to get him back to sleep, just keeps him quiet), or by picking him up and rocking him (soothes him and gets him back to sleep in ~15 minutes). This really is pretty hard crying, not just fussing.

Appreciate any advice from seasoned mamas.
