@littlejoy: Not at all snoring related (I didn't snore), but RE Sinus surgery...it doesn't really do anything for allergies. But if you get frequent infections, it's recommended. I started seeing my ENT instead of a GP for sinus infections so he knew how often I got them. Then he did a head CT and saw how narrow my sinus passages were, and recommended surgery.

My infections were caused by allergic reactions increasing mucous, but then it getting stuck and becoming infected. I'm still on allergy treatments to try to make them easier. The sinus surgery stopped the infections, but now during high allergy times, instead of feeling congested, I feel really really sick (because the mucous drains to my stomach instead of getting stuck in my head). And because of the surgery, I get headaches when the pressure changes.

But even with that, it was worth it. I was having severe sinus infections every 3-4 weeks before I had it done. And recovery was a breeze compared to the pain of those.

But I wanted to make sure to let you know you can treat allergies without the surgery. The surgery is only really called for if there are anatomical issues.

@littlejoy: mine is a snorer too! He sounds like a diseased jet plane. I have to fall asleep first or else I just stay up for hours, kicking him and hating life. He wears nasal strips but that doesn't always work.

@littlejoy: I don't really get sick anymore with sinus infections, which is an added bonus. My sinuses were filled behind my eyes, though, and I was at threat of meningitis. It was definitely a last resort after trying just about everythIng. My recovery wasn't bad, but it's still surgery and I'm sure things would be different now (I was 18).

@matador84: I wondered if nasal strips might help.

@Truth Bombs: We do have a great ENT that I think I could really trust for advice.

@juli7: DH uses Flonase when he's having allergies ... now I'm trying to remember if his snoring is an issue in the spring. I feel like it totally helped!

@LBee: Did sinus surgery have any other benefits? I suffer from horrible seasonal allergies and congestion for months. Thinking about looking into that for myself.

@cascademom: @Truth Bombs: Sinus surgery was going to be my comment too. I will provide a dissenting recovery story - my recovery wasn't bad at all and I was back to school (college) in a week! FWIW, my doctor said very few people (if any) chronically snore just be design - there is usually an underlying reason.

@Adira: Your comment just made me snort. Yup, right there with you, even his breathing sometimes wakes me (and annoys the crap out of me).

Our solution is that he sleeps in a different room, which is on a different floor of the house. It's been this way for a couple of years and works for us. Vacations though are rough. We are going to Hawaii in Sept where we will be sharing a room and I am already looking into buying noise cancelling ear buds.

It took a lot to convince my DH to get a sleep test...and then it didn't find anything.

For us, I started out wearing ear plugs and trying a noise machine. The noise machine didn't work because I wasn't actually hearing him snore, I was feeling it. I'd wake up dreaming of earthquakes.

When we moved to a larger house and got a king sized bed, it got better. Because I can be far enough away from him that he's not making the entire bed vibrate.

@cascademom: yeah I think it's worth it too. My husband had to have surgery to remove half his thyroid this year due to a cancer scare, and he's getting a vasectomy before the year is over as well. So I'm going to hold off before I push him on the sinus surgery since he's spending a lot of time under the knife!

@Truth Bombs: I agree that the recovery sucked hard for sinus surgery, but was worth it. I irrigate my nose every morning now. When the weather's bad, I'll irrigate more. The first weeks were a little rough, after that, it got a lot easier. I use a decongestant in my sinus wash everyday in order to prevent new polyps from forming. I wash extra if it's a bad weather day. I use more headache medicine since that's how my sinuses respond lately.

I was going to suggest surgery or an ENT visit for sure as others have. I had sinus surgery for a blocked left side. I snored worse than my husband. Now, I only snore on my back or when I'm really tired according to my husband. I went through a sleep study, CT scan, and then surgery. My sleep study showed mild apnea when I sleep on my back. I have a body pillow from pregnancy that helps keep me on my side. My quality of life has improved since the surgery.

My husband went through a CT scan, but no sleep study for his snoring. I think his snoring could be weight and not enough sleep induced. We're both working on getting more sleep which has been a challenge with demanding job and life schedules.

Ugh my husband is a terrible snorer. The solution in his case in sinus surgery but he's refuses to do it (he had to have sinus surgery once before in high school and the recovery was miserable). ENT may be an even better place to start than just your husband's PCP

2 surgeries and a several different medications later and we still haven't found a solution. I use white noise to drown it out. We have another possible surgery on the table but after 2 different failed solutions (tonsillectomy and nasal septum revision) it seems harsh to send him in for another one (uvulectomy) with no guarantee it would work.

My grandfather was a lifelong snorer (we couldn't stay with my grandparents growing up as the noise would fill the whole house and keep all of us awake) - when he was about 80 he had his tonsils out and stopped snoring for the first time in his adult life - and my grandmother couldn't sleep!!
I would say a visit to his GP might be in order - it could be a really simple fix! A friend of mine sewed a tennis ball to the back of her husbands pyjamas so he wouldn't end up on his back, and that did the trick (doctor recommended it after assessing him and finding no anatomical reason he was snoring). Good luck!

Has anyone dealt with chronic snoring (yourself or your partner)? In all fairness, all DH has tried is readjusting his pillow situation, so we're basically up for trying anything. If it matters, his snoring isn't usually that deep gargle kind ... it's more of a quieter, shallow snore.

He's average weight, and has probably lost 15-20 lbs over the last year.

What worked for your situation?
