Here is some perspective from the side of a loud person!

When I get excited or angry, my voice volume goes up...and I have no idea. I also can't really whisper. So, my husband (or parents when I lived at home) would have to tell me I was getting loud. Then I could actively manage my volume. So could you start with just a correction: "LO, your voice is too loud, I can hear you just fine." In a neutral tone, not scolding or punishing. Have your LO take a deep breath and say something to cue a lower voice ('ok' is what works for me. Then I can hear where my voice should be)

As for whispering, I find it really difficult because if I actually whisper I can't hear myself, which makes me think that others can't hear me. I think this may be due to sinus problems. I have chronic sinusitis, so I think its affect my hearing. You stated above that you were having sinus problems, so its very possible that your LO does too!

Thanks for the input. The Daniel Tiger video helped frame a dialogue for us. The biggest reason his volume is an issue is because it hurts or scares people (classmates) and the video talked about that.

@wrkbrk: I think a lot of these posts are coming from kids starting preschool and school. DS started in June but with more new kids I think the teachers are trying to regain some control. I did take your post to heart.

When DS’s teachers started harping on his volume (again) I jumped on that bandwagon. He has been driving me nuts and hurting my ears. But most of my pain is coming from sinus issues I’ve been having. They’ve made me more noise sensitive and definitely more irritable. I started antibiotics again today because the ear pain became unbearable yesterday. If it helps me maybe I should suggest some to his teachers too. :silly:

My son is 7 and is LOUD. He was born that way because the rest of us are normal to soft-spoken. I like to joke that he inherited it from my dad. :silly: So far, it hasn’t been a problem at school, but I am constantly reminding him to use his quiet voice and it does get annoying at times. I think the most important thing for now is to realize that we aren’t telling him to shut up. I always tell him, “you can talk, just do it more quietly” (because he’s also a talker). He’s aware of it, but hasn’t really figured out how to control it. I wonder if drama classes would help him when he’s a bit older?

@Corduroy: What is with all of these posts? My blood is boiling. They are KIDS. Babies. Toddlers. They yell, they’re rough when they play, they don’t follow directions sometimes. Why do we have to “correct” every behavior and make each child fit the same mold?! UGH.

DD went through this for awhile. Her voice carries like a 'teacher voice'. She grew out of it. When I video her, she turns it back on.
You could give the talk about make your voice only loud enough so that whoever you are talking is the only person who can you hear you. So decide who you are talking to, then adjust your volume. A lot of times, it is the 'talking to yourself' or 'someone else that is not supposed to be hearing it' is why it is annoyingly loud. Roleplay.

Yes, Daniel Tiger has a few clips about being too loud.

There is this one as well as others. I would just type in "Daniel Tiger too loud."

DS, 3yo, is loud. Now he’s getting bad reports at preschool for being too loud. I’ve always known my kids are loud but they went to a very loud DCP. I chalked it up to cultural differences and we never really made an effort to correct their volume. My daughter adjusted on her own but DS is just getting louder. I don’t think this is a physical issue because he has no trouble hearing us.

I feel like I remind him to speak more quietly a thousand time a day. I ask him to repeat himself more quietly when he asks for something too loudly. I haven’t introduced inside voice vs outside voice because his outside voice is way too loud as well.

What else should I be doing? Is there a Daniel Tiger or something?
