Update: went to the doc after the pain got really really bad - basically due to my tensing up more & more.... Bad muscle strain that was swollen and then pressing against nerves causing some numbness in my hands... Got some muscle relaxers & 800mg motrin - by 7 pm last night it was much more bearable, and I slept really well last night...

Still really sore today, but can move which is great - i even made it into work.

Tricky with the motrin & muscle relaxers & breastfeeding... I took one muscle relaxer last night at 5, and didn't breastfeed until 6:30 this morning, took some motrin & breastfed a couple hours later. i guess I'll try to take another muscle relaxer tonight after LO goes to bed...

dumped all the milk from yesterday I pumped while taking the meds, so sad.... had to pump at 2am and my milk was BLUE... so weird, that usually happens when i drink. ha.

There is also Arnica cream that you can use to help swelling. Have you checked your lymph nodes to make sure they aren't swollen?

@Lately: thank you!! Yeah, I think some daily stretching is going to be a good idea. Do you adjust the way you sleep? It seems to keep happening when I wake up

@hellobeeboston: From time to time I get debilitating neck pain where I can't move my head for a few days. I can usually trace it to a cramped up spot just inside my shoulder blade (when it's really bad I also have trouble raising my arm on the affected side).

I've discovered a regimen that keeps it from getting really bad, and makes it improve significantly faster. At the first sign of trouble I take some ibuprofen to help reduce the pain and irritation. Then I alternate between applying heat and forcing myself to do some gentle stretches for my neck, shoulders and arms. It's uncomfortable and difficult, but it makes a big difference for me.

I hope you feel better soon!

@blackbird: really?? I've never been to a chiropractor, it kinda scares me a little! Does insurance cover that??

Gotta do something, since LO was born I have woken Up with a sore neck a few times, but nothing this bad.

I'd see a chiropractor. A TENS unit and an adjustment have fixed pinched nerves in my neck before where I literally could not turn a certain way! Muscle relaxers are good, too...they just don't fix the cause, but definitely will make you feel better!

Oh geez. I have no idea. I would probably heat it but I don't know if that's the right thing. You may need to get some muscle relaxers if it doesn't calm down on it's own. I'm so sorry!!

I woke up this morning and felt a crick in my neck - tried to reposition and slept a little more. Heard LO start to cry and sat up to really bad neck pain. Picked him up almost dropped him from the pain, had to wake up DH to help me and to position lO so I could nurse him.

3 hours later: pain is just as bad if not worse, tried hot towels, then shower, now heating pad - tried ice for a bit too but that seemed to make it worse.

Took some Tylenol, called the doc & waiting to hear back. Ahhh... What do I do? I obviously didn't go to work because I cannot drive like this - can barely move my head.

Advice?!?!?
