@JJ2626: thanks for the advice. I have been letting him climb, and helping him get down, and amazingly he’s being less crazy and caught on to sliding down on his belly really fast!

@pachamama: Agreed! I do need to let him get his energy out. I plan to be outside more when it warms up a bit. Lining the floor with the cushions is something I’m going to start doing too! I think part of the reason he is being so wild, is because it’s new and exciting and he thinks he’s doing something he’s not supposed to be! I think the novelty will be gone in a few weeks for sure.

I really appreciate that. They are my little rainbows and have made our lives so full! I hope you and your crew are all doing well.

@Jessiemuller88: My second was a climber. I found getting their energy out outside and encouraging climbing was the only thing that worked. Playgrounds, short hikes, nature preserves, state parks etc. We are in icy NY with many covid restrictions but there is so much to do outside, surprisingly. Also... can you take the cushions off and line the floor around the couch with them? Then they can climb easily and fall safer. My kids love that. looks sloppy but oh well.
Like most baby issues, in a few weeks it always passes! But its so annoying honestly!

@Clementine12: This is helpful! I think I’ll try to change my focus to teaching him how to be safe and get off the couch instead of just stressing about it.

@periwinklebee: thank you, and good luck to you too!

@ElbieKay: I can picture it! I’m sure they were having the time of their life. Mine totally feed off each other and get into way more mischief than my older DS ever did!

We have a Nugget on back order. It’s supposed to arrive by March, so hopefully that will help a bit!

I’d let her climb but redirect the jumping off if you can. My now 3 year old has always been a climber but was less focused on the jumping off. We taught her early to slide “backwards” off the couch. She still climbed but didn’t try to dive off once she knew how to get off. She is still a climber and she does it safely. That said, I definitely couldn’t leave the room when she was 1 and barely can now, so maybe I didn’t really solve the problem!

@Jessiemuller88: Teach him some skills like @Clementine12 recommended. Put some pillows around. He's not the first, nor will he be the last, child to do this.

My twins went through a long phase of climbing onto the dining table via chairs. We still have the dining chairs scattered around instead of fully stored at the table. It's a vestige from a year ago when that behavior peaked. I have an adorable of them both walking around on top of the table having the time of their life at age 1.5.

He'll be ok, and this is only a phase.

Also, maybe look into a Nugget?

ETA: I can't believe your twins are already a year old!!

@Jessiemuller88: Good luck :goodluck: :goodluck: You are a total super star going through all these stages with twins...

I have no recollection of this with my older child either. He was challenging in his own ways, but was and still is a pretty cautious kid, so I think was just easier in this regard...

@Jessiemuller88: I have no idea how helpful this might be but I follow milestones.and.motherhood on Instagram- she's a pediatric PT and often talks about the proper way to teach kiddos to climb off things like a couch (urge them to roll to their belly, guide their feet to the floor, then offer less and less assistance until it's the natural move). Not helpful for a child insistent on being superman though

Good luck!

@periwinklebee: oh no! I’m sorry you are going through it too. I agree that they don’t know how reckless it is! I just hope it’s a short phase. I moved our coffee table too, and sometimes I line the ground with pillows in case he falls!

I’m trying to remember what it was like with my 4 year old, but I guess it was just easier with him because he was the only child 🤷🏼‍♀️ It is encouraging to hear it’s getting better with your DD.

@Jessiemuller88: I'm not on here much anymore, but just saw this and it's perfect timing, as this is the story of my life.

My one year old is obsessed, she will not stop climbing on the furniture, couch especially, and wants to dive off the back. They were home for daycare for the past three weeks due to covid closures/exposures there, and I feel like I have spent the entire time dealing with this. It makes it challenging at best to pay attention to my three year old, because I'm constantly having to grab her, sit her down, and say "couches are for our bottoms". Over and over and over....

I moved the coffee table against a wall so there is empty space in front of the couch, so if she does fall at least it wouldn't be so bad as if she fell on the corner of the coffee table. I would push the couch against the wall so she couldn't try to dive off the back, but unfortunately with our radiator there is not space.

This has been her thing for a couple of months. Since I can't remove the furniture from the room, the best I know to do is to just sit her down and say firmly "couches are for our bottoms." Over and over. She is slowly getting better, perhaps there is a better way I'm missing. I'm also pretty strict about not letting my three year old mimic this behavior or encourage it...

We have one tiny step down from the hallway into a room elsewhere in our house, and she is so cautious there because she fell at one point. But is a reckless little daredevil on the furniture because I think she just doesn't realize how reckless it is...

I am a SAHM with one year old twins and a 4 year old. Our living room is large and has a gate that contains the kiddos. We spend most of the day in this room, so it’s full of toys and is completely safe... until now!

One of my twins just figured out how to climb on the couch, and now I’m in constant fear of him falling. He’s a wild man on it and won’t just sit down. I can’t even leave the room now, it’s awful. I have no idea what to do. Any tips? Will he eventually just be cool on the couch? It’s so stressful and exhausting. It’s the only thing he wants to do now.
