One thing I have heard helps is to make it as positive of an experience as possible for her. Don't force her to nurse, but let her spend lots of time on your chest and in that position without even offering the breast. I hope maybe that helps, so sorry you are going through this. I too really like nursing and am hoping we make it to a year.

@mrs. wagon: Thanks. Im going to keep at it for as long as it takes for me to realize its done. Then Ill keep pumping. I love nursing, so its really painful (mentally) for me to accept. Its just hard to not tkae it personally I think =o)

@Maysprout: Yes, we do BLW. Maybe thats why. Ill try the milk on a finger trick tonight to see if maybe that will help, Thanks =o)

You're doing BLW right? I've started letting my daughter self feed more and more and now getting her to eat off a spoon is so hard and she used to love spoons. She wants to just feed herself and take charge, maybe your daughter needs more control.

Maybe when she's starting to get hungry go hang out topless in bed with her and give her a taste of milk on your finger so she remembers where milk comes from and then wait for her to come to you. I've done that a few times when my daughter is being stubborn and it seems to work pretty well, sometimes she needs a few reminders of milk from my finger to remember mama has tasty treats and a bit of time for her to stop playing.

My daughter is becoming a lot more instructive about when she wants to nurse, I think they're just getting to that almost toddler age where they say 'do it myself' except they can't actually say that yet.

aww... :( RJ self-weaned around 7 months... that's when they get more interested in the world around them and get distracted from nursing. It could be a phase... I would say keep trying and at the same time, try to enjoy the bottle feeding even though it's not the same physical bond as nursing. I didn't enjoy nursing so weaning wasn't sad for me, but I could totally see how it could be sad, especially if you didn't initiate it. However, watching him learn how to feed himself the bottle and solid foods was also a joyful process.

She might prefer the faster or more consistent flow of the bottle. I would encourage you to just keep trying and try not to take it personally... it's sad to see them grow up and further and further away from you, but also great to watch them learn how to do things for themselves as well. And it has to happen at SOME point anyway... but hopefully it's just a phase and you will be able to nurse longer.

I tried laying down side by side, with her on my belly, in the tub, sitting, standing. Nada. Id think it might be weaning, but its weird because she will latch on for like 2 seconds then pull off and push me away. I dont know why she'd even latch if she wanted to wean. Its breaking my heart. I wanted to go for at least a year. I wasnt ready to be done at 8 months

You could try sitting positions... keep in mind though that some babies self wean after a certain point. I hope that's not the case and she comes back to it!

Have you tried any different positions - like nursing laying down or with her sitting on your lap?
My daughter is a little older and I still occasionally swaddle her to get her to focus.

Hi all. Liv is 8 months old. She had a pretty nasty cold last week, and this week it seems that she might be cutting one or both of her top teeth. She has been on a nursing strike since saturday and its killing me. She wouldnt take a bottle the first few days, so we had to give her milk in a regular adult cup or a sippy cup, but now she will take the bottle. If I offer her the breast or even try to put her in a nursing position, she bucks and pushes me away and throws a fit. She does that if I even try to give her a bottle in that position. Ive even tried to dreamfeed her and she wakes up pissed off that she is being held in that position (guess the bonus is she is cutting her night feeding out on her own...) I dont know whats going on with her. Do you think its the pain? Or possibly ear pain? She has no fever, no ear pulling, no symptoms of anything except teething. Id just think that if she can suck her bottle (still with the infant flow nipple on it) then nursing wouldnt be much different.

I just keep thinking "What if I nursed her for the last time and didnt know?" and thats making me cry lol.
