I would suggest getting dry ice. It keeps things cold for hours. I've taken frozen items with dry ice onto 5-6 hour flights and I still have dry ice left when I get to my destination.

Some grocery stores sell dry ice. Some would go Long way to keeping things cold.

@MamaG: Texas is def hotter than CA. Smart about the coin. Will do that. Thx

@DesertDreams88: starting to make ice in large Tupperware containers now. Thx

Definitely buy or make large blocks of ice (gallon bags mostly filled with water? double bagged?), put them in the freezer, fill the freezer completely with ice, leave it closed for the entire time.

I saw something recently that said to freeze a small bowl of water and place a coin on top of the ice. Place in the freezer. When the power comes back assess if the coin is still on top. Or if it fell, meaning the water thawed and refrozen.

I believe it will be fine. We went without power this summer for closer to 18 hours and didn't open our freezers or refrigerator and everything was fine. For reference, we are in Texas.

@iluvboba637: apparently they make a t thermometer that you can read outside the freezer without opening the door. It might help so you'd know if you needed to go get more ice without constantly opening the door

@Shantuck: yeah I think I'm going to ask my brother if he could take some.

@ShootingStar: @JenGirl: @JCCovi: thanks for your responses. I was thinking leaving it in the freezer is the safest but I was worried because the garage is warmer than inside the house.

@T.H.O.U.: I thought of a generator but was scared of the cost. Didn't think about renting it. Thx.

@MrsSRS: very good point. Just had DH turn it up to the coldest setting. Thx!

I agree. Start filling extra space with ice and then just keep it closed during the power outage. We had power go out a few months back and we just kept the freezer shut overnight and all the milk was fine.

Start freezing bags or containers of water to make solid blocks of ice to fill freezer now.
You should be fine if you keep it closed.

Another option would be to look at renting a generator. Should be maybe $50 for a day

I would just make sure the freezer is completely full starting a couple days before the outage and then don't open it at all. Some long as there is still some ice in each bag it is good to refreeze.

I'd keep it in there and don't open it. Fill all the extra space with ice. Then when the power's back on make sure there's still ice crystals in one or two bags closest to the door.

An ice chest will be way less insulated. And you'll mess with the temp more by constantly opening it.

We just got notice that there will be a power outage for scheduled maintenance from 5am-6pm next Saturday 10/29. I'm totally freaking out about what I'm gonna do w all my frozen milk!!!

I know they say to keep it in the freezer and not open the freezer door but our deep freezer is in the garage where temps are warmer. Luckily the forecast is low 70s next Saturday, but could definitely get warmer in SoCal. And isn't that only for just 3-4hrs?

Or would it be better to throw all the frozen bags of milk into a huge ice chest packed with lots of bags of ice and ice packs and keep replenishing the ice every few hours. We live a few minutes from the store and can go pick up bags of ice. I could also freeze lots of the bigger ice packs the night before.
