@jedeve: HUGS hugs hugs! I just battled this myself and it was thrush. Are your blisters accompanied with a stinging pain inside your breast that lingers after feeding?

I was able to heal the blisters by hand expressing and applying breastmilk to my nipple. They came right back when I tried to feed again :( Thrush sucks.

I second the lecithin but a hospital lactation consultant is not the same as an IBCLC and I would encourage you to find one in your area. She should be covered by insurance now that ObamaCare inacted. They will help look at latch and diagnose thrush. Also try and get some APNO (all purpose nipple ointment) incase it is thrush.

I had a bad recurring blister for a while and the only thinv that finally got it to go away was filling a bowl with warm salt water and leaning over it with my nipple in the water. I did it a few times a day for as long as I could and then used a warm washcloth during the day and put nipple butter on, especially overnight. Hopefully it goes away for you soon!

@Kemma: he is one so the position is wherever he wants to be! I've tried lancing several times and it's as if the dried milk won't come out. No one in my OB office woukd do it.

The blisters could possibly be caused by the way your LO latches, have you tried different nursing positions? If you're planning on continuing with bf'ing then it might be worth seeing a dermatologist, especially if it's covered by your insurance!

My other thought is to lance the blister then pump or hand express out the dried milk rather than nurse?

I've tried all the typical techniques. It's like there is dried milk that won't come out no matter what I do.

Can you leave a warm washcloth/heating pad on your nipple for a while, and/or on the painful side while you're nursing (if you can do it without hurting LO obviously). I got tons of blisters in the early days but just used a lot of heat and had success with that after a few days. Good luck, I know it sucks!

I had many, many recurring blisters... I would manage to clear the blister, and the skin would grow over and then I would get another one in the same spot a month later. It helps to exfoliate with a washcloth in the shower, and also keep a cotton ball with some olive oil on it (stuffed in your bra) to keep the pores soft (learned this from an ISIS video). Also, if you are using a needle to lance it (I got in a habit of doing this), it kind of makes for a vicious cycle if you don't exfoliate. I don't think you need to see a dermatologist...
Hopefully someone else can answer your question about thrush!

This question is two fold. (fine, two and a half fold).

1. I have gotten probably 4-5 milk blisters since I've been breastfeeding over the past year. My LC/LLL leader says she has never heard of anyone having problems with recurrent ones.

2. I have two on one nipple that won't go away, and it is very painful to nurse with it. I've tried several times to get rid of them myself. They've been there about three weeks. The hospital LCs aren't able to do anything about it, and no one in my OB office will either. My MW told me to ask a dermatologist, but I am skeptical they will do anything either. I mean, they can't have much nipple experience??

2.5 I'm starting to get pain on the right side of the breast with the blisters. It's not mastitis, or a plug. I don't know if it's thrush??

I'm so frustrated no one will help me! :-(
