@Cherrybee: I am so relieved to hear that you had a better bedtime experience tonight. Thank goodness for teething gel, sweet husbands who bring magical wine, and other moms to vent to on the internet!

It's naptime here, and my Dad is keeping my son this week while our daycare provider is out of the country for her daughter's wedding. I looked on the monitor and my Dad gave him his paci! I may kill him. While I understand that it stops the tears, it's what we're trying to eliminate!! Sigh. At least he's lying down (reading a book, not napping yet, little turkey).

Vent anytime, mama. We can empathize, if nothing else!!

Our lo had a niht like that once, and he actually had a really sore throat. I took him to the doctor because it was so unusual for him to be so out of sorts (he was up like that every 2 hours) and he had a nasty virus. It could also be an ear infection.

Lo really likes baby einstein videos (they are free on youtube) when he is inconsolable. The music is soothing too. We cuddle on the couch and they help him settle down. He isnt a cuddler, but when he is hurting or upset it really helps him.

@ballerinabee: Oh no, that sounds sore. I hope you're feeling better really soon.... and so does your poor LO.

@Anutka: Thank you. Hugs help.

Well the good news (so far) is that she went down easily tonight. That's entirely down to DH who went to the chemist after work and bought some new, kick ass teething gel which stopped her crying within a minute this evening. He also bought me a bottle of wine, bless him, so everyone's sufficiently medicated tonight! Thanks everyone for all your advice and for talking me down off the ceiling (where I seem to spend a lot of time these days).

@Cherrybee: I feel your pain. We're weaning our LO from his pacifier, and nights have been awful. Turns out he's finally getting his upper 2nd yr molars as well, so last night was especially bad.

I wish I had thought to take him for a walk outside! I got an injection in my spine yesterday, so I couldn't have, but DH could have! We'll definitely try that tonight if we have a repeat of the miserable crying. LO didn't settle down until after 10pm, and then was up again for over an hour around 1am. And DH and I both work.

<hugs>

@Cherrybee: That sounds like such a rough night! I'm glad she finally went to sleep. When I take H outside when it's cold, I just throw a big blanket and a hat on over her pjs. She stays toasty warm.

I hope that tonight is much better for you!

@Cherrybee: general hugs for such a rough night!

Outside in the stroller was my go-to for rough nights. I was the weirdo lady pushing a stroller at 11 pm on the empty suburban streets. BUT it would always calm LO down, worth it.

ETA: And I would usually just wrap a heavy blanket around her for cold nights on top if her pjs.

@looch: @Kemma: Y'know, I had the URGE to put her in her pushchair and take her round the block..... but I didn't do it because that would have meant putting more clothes on her (it's cold here at night now) and I was scared she would wake up more - so I pushed the thought to the back of my mind. Maybe those long awaited mummy-instincts were trying to kick in!! :silly:

Sounds like you all had a rough night, I hope it's just a fluke and things get back to normal soon.

I used to take my son out on the balcony on nights like that, as Kemma suggested, my mom was convinced he would stop crying because he thought I was going to drop him over the ledge! I think there's something to them be exposed to the fresh air that "resets" them.

@Mama Bird: Aaw. We have a leather 2 seated sofa and I don't fancy my chances keeping my fat arse on it! Haha!

@Applesandbananas: That has to be your worst (sleep related) nightmare! I hope your new job is going well?

@Kemma: Yeah, in the light of day I can see thst he was a big part of the problem..... because the correct answer was "cuddle her and be there for her while she cries for as long as it takes" but I was so intent on just stopping her crying and getting her to sleep so that DH would calm down that I couldn't see that actually I was asking the wrong question! I should have been asking "how do I comfort her?" not "how can I make her stop screaming and go to sleep?"

She slept from 11.40pm until DH's alarm woke her at 7am. She refused her milk and her breakfast, poor thing. I really hope this tooth comes through quickly now.

My LO did this at 7 months due to a cold and teething, and it was awful. I'm so sorry! I did like @MamaBird and wound up cuddling him on the couch watching TV together and we stayed that way most of the night. If I even thought about taking my arms from around him, he'd start freaking out. It was only one night, but I agree, it breaks your heart to hear them them sob and cry like that. Hang in there and hope it gets better soon!

@Cherrybee: hugs. I hope she's down for the night!

We had a particularly brutal evening similar to this (the night before my first day at the new job, of course!) and holding him tight and upright and letting him watch cartoons was what finally got him asleep. I think it was a combo of teeth, ear drainage, and gas and I was less patient with him because I was nervous about the next day and anxious to get some sleep and that just made things worse.

We have a couch sofa thing that folds out into a bed. I don't know why, but when B was in a lot of pain from teething he'd only sleep there. I don't even think it was because I was next to him... maybe it was just the change of scenery. I slept next to him so he wouldn't fall off :)

Its now 11.40 and she is asleep again. We got her up at 11.10 but even that didn't calm her down, she screamed in my arms until 11.30. We got some warm milk down her and she started to fall asleep on our bed (unheard of) so we put her in her crib and she went straight off. I just hope she sleeps through now.

@ladybee: Yeah, its hard not to be upset with him but I can't react because that would just make it worse in the moment. Once he got out of his arse, he was really key to calming hr down - he's the only one who can get medicine down her for one.

Poor baby.

This happened to me when O had an ear infection (and was cutting molars). She was "fine" during the day but as soon as she hit her crib she screamed and screamed. I think because laying down hurt her ears, plus the teething pressure, but I have no idea. I didn't know she had an ear infection for another day or two when I took her in and felt awful haha! mom of the year.

@looch: Yes - and dummies (pacis) but she throws them out as soon as you give them back when she's in this kind of state.

@RubyCali: @loveisstrange: Good stuff. That's what we are going with. She cries it out every night - 10 mins Max usually - but tonight she has been crying for hours with two breaks in between and it seems to be escalating. Its awful.

@Cole: She gets REALLY mad if you go into her room but don't pick her up. I've never tried lights off, sleep on the floor though..... (We've got wooden floors though so I will need to think this through!!)

Update: its 10.40 and she has gone to sleep. I hope it lasts.

@Cherrybee: :(

Whenever S's bedtime is "off" we just do gradual extinction...so a check after 5 mins, then another 10 and that's usually enough but often it takes her up to half an hour to settle lately. During the checks though we just pick her up and hold her until she is calm...never turn the light on, talk to her (apart from going "shhhhhh") and definitely stay in the room.

Honestly, I'd probably let her cry. There have been a few occasions that we've had this happen and we let C just go after we exhausted all other options and were sure she was fed, dry and not sick.

Oh no! How miserable for all of you! The only thing I can think of is to grab a pillow and blanket and camp out on her floor for a bit. Whether you pull her down to the floor with you or not is up to you. Keep it super dark and get some white noise or soft music going and try to ignore her unless she is pretty calm and then maybe rub her back. I had this tactic work once for me so perhaps it will help?

Good luck!

Oh no!! Poor baby (and mama!). Are you okay with letting her cry it out a little? Whenever my LO gets like this and I've done all that I can do I try graduated extinction, with brief comfort checks at 5 minutes, then 7, then 10, then 12.... Hang in there!!

Oh OK, DH is now snoring beneath the pillow he put over his face. At least that's one problem I don't need to worry about.
