I used to throw them in the washer and the dryer, no special treatment. Probably not supposed to do that, haha. But it worked!

My husband has the smelliest sneakers ever since he manages a restaurant... We put baking soda in them and leave them outside on the porch. He rotates between pairs every couple of days. He also gets high-quality sports socks (not brand loyal).

@sandy: @looch: @Pumuckl: I'm going to try all of these things! On a whim I bought a Dr. Scholls shoe spray yesterday, so maybe I can use that between washings and airings.

@Iced Tea: that makes sense. I'm going to see about getting a second pair of sneakers.

Lots of things can help, but nothing will take out all the smell once it's there. The best route is prevention, letting each pair of shoes air out thoroughly for at least 24 hours between wears. Wearing the same pair day after day just feeds moisture-loving bacteria and fungus. We keep our shoes on rotation now and don't get the smell anymore.

@Pumuckl: I actually read that too! That freezing kills all the odor causing stuff

I read somewhere that putting them into the freezer for a couple of days is supposed to help. Never tried it myself though.

I made these shoe inserts from knee high stockings and cat litter...they're supposed to absorb odors. I am not convinced they work, but I am trying.

For my son's sneakers, every once in a while i take out the insole and wash them. Then I dry them in the sun.

@lamariniere: So this happened when C started to take off her socks and wear her sneakers - they smelled awful! What's worked for us is to spray Febreeze into them and then let them dry out in the sun. I've also seen stuff online that says putting tea bags into the shoes will absorb the smell or get a coffee filter (or a fine mesh bag) and fill with baking soda and place them in the shoe or you can fill with laundry detergent and place in the shoe. Good luck!

My son has been wearing his new school sneakers for exactly 2 weeks and they already stink! What do you do to combat stinky sneakers? Have you tried any products that really work? Or can different socks make a difference? The sneakers are Adidas, made from some sort of synthetic material.

We haven't had this problem yet because at daycare, they wore house shoes inside and only had on real shoes for outdoor play.
