@mamakatz: Thanks! I meant to update here to say that I bought a couple Summer SwaddleMes to tide us over until the woombies get here, and they have helped! She can still break out, but it takes her an hour or two instead of 5 seconds :p

Her sleep has vastly improved since we put her in them!!

You may have already decided on what you are going to try, but both of my children were swaddled using the Summer SwaddleMe blankets. I like them because you can decide how tight you want them. My kids loved being swaddled in them and it definitely let me get some much needed sleep. Both babies were sleeping through the night at 7-8 weeks and didn't break out of them. Good luck.

I currently have pretty much every swaddle helper in the book sitting in a drawer in the baby's room-- miracle blanket, swaddle me, woombie, plus A&A blankets. I haven't opened most of them on the chance that I'll find something that works right away, but I wanted to be prepared with everything when the baby gets here since my nephew was a houdini too. The Miracle Blanket worked best for him, so I have those hand me downs ready to go.

@mrsbookworm: We swaddle her in a halo or an A&A blanket, and she ALWAYS is out of it each time she wakes. With the halo my goal is to keep her arms from hitting her face. So I'll do it so if she wiggles her hands come out the bottom. She looks weird but at least won't startle herself by hitting in the face. But she does not sleep well either way. This morning I did a particularly tight one and could hear her lying in her pack n play working at it for 15-20 minutes until she got her arms out.

Before you buy a woombie/swaddleme!! I thought it was our answer too. But here's a picture of my child at about 3.5 weeks old busting out of a swaddle-me, which is like a woombie, except cheaper. This took her less than 5 minutes the first time i put it on her. She can also make short work of a halo sleepsack (with the velcro) or a traditional blanket swaddle.

Edited to add: your baby sounds like mine - long, lean, and strong. She could roll from side to side right away, and lift herself up if i hold her arms... and hold her head up no problem. Strong babies unite!

This has been my most successful and she can even bust out of this if she works at it a bit.

yeah we've been miracle blanket-ing it up, too. The double swaddle was great for a few weeks but it was warmer for her and she started breaking out.

@Bookworm: isn't it amazing how strong a newborn can be?? I was so surprised by this! We have the miracle swaddle but are less than impressed. It would be better if it came with some kind of velcro closure.
My LO regularly breaks out of A&A's and the miracle blanket, but that's all we have ever used (12 weeks now). We just learned to do it tighter and tighter, and got used to re-doing it in the middle of the night sometimes.
Good luck! Maybe get super baby a cape!!! ;)

You might think we're crazy but we had a houdini and we used the miracle blanket first then topped it off with the woombie. LO was a winter baby and we didn't have heating so it worked in our favor. Not sure if your climate will allow you to do this? Good luck!

one word: WOOMBIE!!!

eta: LMW has superhuman strength and broke out of every single swaddle we tried (especially ones with velcro) except miracle blanket, which she started breaking out of later on as well. We couldn't double swaddle because it was summer and she was a sweaty baby. So we went to the woombie and never looked back. Loved it. She even busted through the seams and I had to sew it back together but it's SO much easier than swaddling (just zip it up!) and keeps them in there!!!

Baby Bookworm is just over a week old, and it's already terrifying how strong she is. She rolled from her left to right side at 4 (!!) days, and is starting to lift her head up pretty frequently when I'm burping her on my chest.

So, super baby doesn't seem to be agreeing well with our A&A swaddles. She was always able to break out, even when the expert nurses at the hospital did it, but last night it's like a switch flipped and it *really* bothered her to have her hands out. We tried double swaddling, no dice.

I'm sending DH to Target in a couple hours, and could really use some help on what new swaddle to buy. She is currently working back up to her birth weight of 7lbs9oz, and is a very long, lean baby.

Help! We were up all night trying to calm her down and keep her darn arms from scaring her, and we all need some sleep!
