I don't know a lot about the early stage, but I am a pre-k teacher and I wish more parents would send their boys in pants that are easy to get off. After their are first potty trained they pee a little bit in their pants before they can get the button undone.

At first we potty trained him sitting down. We showed him how to hold it down so that it doesn't spray everywhere. After a few months, he wanted to pee like his daddy so he started peeing standing up. I love that he does it standing up because public restrooms are so gross and now he doesn't have to sit on the toilet seat. He's never had any issues with aim nor has he ever pooped while standing up. If anything, it helped him figure out how to poop faster because he learned which muscles to push for what purpose.

We would hold his penis down for him in the beginning and always say "hold your penis down". By 2 years old he did it himself. We still remind him occasionally but doing it for him in the beginning was the only way to prevent spray.

We use this and it has a little guard in front to avoid spray.
http://www.amazon.com/BABYBJORN-Toilet-Trainer-White-Black/dp/B0009PAN7Q/ref=sr_1_1?s=baby-products&ie=UTF8&qid=1383678947&sr=1-1&keywords=bjorn+potty+seat

Also, we have taught DS to make sure his weewee is pointing down before he pees.

The only time we do standing up is outside. Otherwise, there is no way he could do the standing by himself unless he uses his other potty chair, and I really don't want him peeing on the floor every time.

@mrs. wagon: Hahah. Ok,. I'm not sure if he;ll do it, but definitely worth trying! Also cheaper/easier than a "shield."

@Mamaof2: When did you start with standing up?
I heard these two reasons not to:
1 (from my husband) He doesn't have the manual dexterity to aim.
2 (from another mom) He might poop on the floor.
I have no clue if 1 or 2 are true. My son is only 17 months, but has been pooping at least some days on the potty since 8 months (he had issues with pooping in his diaper).

On the big potty, I sit DS right at the edge of the seat, so his penis pushes against the rim and points down. On his little potty, I taught him to sit forward/lean forward so his penis points down. I got sprayed a lot at the beginning, lol, and it was NOT fun!

Yes ditto - have him push it down and then work on him standing up! DS wanted to be like daddy and pee standing so it was an easy transition for us!

@pastemoo: ohhhh I feel your pain for sure. We pushed his wee-wee (that's the word we used... no idea why) down for him in the beginning whenever he was on the potty. Also, if you teach them to lean forward while they're sitting, that helps them to aim into the bowl as well. After a week or two he figured out how to push it down himself. He still misses sometimes if he's in a big rush. But yeah... if no one is pushing it down, it gets EVERYWHERE!!!

After being peed the last three times my son wanted to "poop" he actually peed instead. And then clapped "YAY!" Adorable. Unfortunately he is on a soft seat on the big potty and so it sprayed right out at me. Lovely.

How do you prevent the spray?

I was told not to start him peeing standing up because then he might poop on the floor... so I suppose I'd rather clean the pee that the poop, but someone must make some pee-shielding device, right?

How do you stay dry while potty training your son?

(I'm taking this as his sign that he is ready to potty train. He is only 17 months but he's obsessed with the older kids in the neighborhood and at daycare.)
