It's just drinks and snacks. So I would take a bottle of wine, and/or some type of snack. Dessert would be fine. These things do tend to run on though so don't be surprised if it does spill into dinner time, but they won't be providing dinner. You might just end up filling up on snacks or ordering takeout

Agreeing with everybody else, it's just drinks and little snacks - mixed nuts, maybe a cheese plate. Bringing dessert would be a bit weird, like you were inviting yourself to stay for dinner. Just bring wine or flowers or something.

@SugarplumsMom: I agree with the above, drinks and snacks, pretty much what we do when we have people over at 4pm. Maybe some cheese and charcuterie, or little appetizers. We normally eat dinner late (9 or 9:30), so it would have to be a very long get-together to run up against dinner, unless we were specifically having people over for dinner, and then we would eat earlier.

@T.H.O.U.: not a Brit, but agree with this. A nibble to me is like a light snack (nuts, cheese and crackers). Wine is always a great hostess gift!

I would assume its like appetizers?

I would think that means stop by to have a drink but then yes, move on for your own dinner plans.

For a gift, I would maybe just do a normal bottle of wine and flowers or something.

We were casually invited for "drinks and nibbles" at a neighbor's house and I assumed it meant an after dinner or even dinner meeting. It was only after hearing the time (at 4pm) that I realized I may have misunderstood the meaning of drinks and nibbles.

British bees, please fill me in. Should we make sure to leave before dinner time or are we supposed to stick around? We are both expats living abroad and the local culture doesn't normally invite people over for dinner and I don't want to intrude. Also, what's an acceptable gift? I was thinking of bringing dessert and dessert wine.

Thanks!
