@Beehive: we went to see family, it was their first time meeting LO. But it was so ridiculously hot that we really didn't do anything else... We wouldn't have done touristy things anyway because we've done it all before and LO isn't old enough to appreciate it yet, but it would have been nice to do more sailing or just SOMETHING other than hiding indoors in the AC all day!

I think it's smart to bring a ton of pouches as backup. You should be able to make the teeny alphabet/star pasta in boiling water from the kettle or coffee pot in your room. And we always took back fruit, yogurt, cheese, bread, and noodle/rice dishes from the buffet for our baby at that age. I personally didn't stress too much about fruit; if it's a nice resort it should be getting cleaned properly...though you can always rewash it yourself to be extra safe.

@Beehive: we were also just in Istanbul! Were you on vacation or visiting family/friends?

@Tanjowen: my LO is 8.5 months and when we were away, we mainly did pouches. A couple times, I made fresh purees (we were staying with family so they had kitchen gadgets we could use) but I found the pouches to be by far the easiest. We also gave her some hunks of fresh fruit to gnaw on -- melon, peaches, banana -- and she LOVED that.

8 months is a tough one... we followed similar rules while in Istanbul recently just to be completely safe but DS was 21 months... at 8 months I'd add to your list things like oranges (peeled, not cut), little bits of cooked meat, cooked veggies, non-runny eggs, breads. And of course bottled water (even for brushing teeth and rinsing the toothbrush, if you're brushing teeth at this point!).

@birdofafeather: I totally agree. Pouches are expensive but it sounds like the easiest solution in this scenario.

At that age, I would have just bought a bunch of pouches for peace of mind!

How about chicken soup? We did a beach trip around that age and I brought my own rice cereal and gave him lots of avocados and bananas!

Our usual on the go meals, which would work for you, probably, are cheese cubes and pouches. I'd probably be nervous about the water and fruit/veggies too, especially raw, so would be inclined to just bring a ton of pouches.

@Tanjowen: you could always check with your resort! Maybe they'll put one in your room for a fee. Or maybe they'll make it for you in the hotel restaurant with milk or bottled water. Oatmeal is so filling for LOs.

@beaker: Rice is a good idea! And yes, I am concerned about using anything washed in the local water. I know they provide bottled water for use, and I suppose cooked veggies will be fine too.

My 8 month old is starting to get "serious" about food and we do 2 meals a day. We have a trip planned in 2 weeks to the Dominican Republic, and I'm curious about what to feed him while there. His pediatrician told me at his 6 month appointment that the Hep A shot isn't until 12 months, so we need to be careful until then with food while traveling.

We are staying at an All Inclusive that will do buffets for breakfast and lunch, and different restaurants for dinner. I know items in a thick peel should be fine, such as bananas and avocado. I am planning on taking pouches for him too. He HATES being spoon fed, so we don't do purees beyond the pouches.

Any ideas on what he can eat there from anyone's experience, or ideas on what I can purchase or make that will survive the trip?
