We withdrew attention for unwanted behavior like hitting or scratching. So if she was drinking a bottle and pinched me, we firmly said NO, pulled her hand away, and sat her down on the floor. Any hitting or biting or scratching was met with NO and then completely ignoring her for five minutes (sometimes I set a timer—and of course we kept an eye on her but pretended we weren’t) while she wailed. We figured that she was enjoying the reaction and attention from hurting us (even negative attention was still a net gain for her), so we tried to take that away. It took about a month, but she eventually learned that doing those things is not in her best interest.

It’s this age! Drives me nuts sometimes. Keep those nails short! Also is there anything baby especially likes and usually can’t have? For changes that involve wrestling I can often distract her with this portable sound machine we have - she loves buttons and electronics plus it has some texture and sound. That might not be the distraction that works for you but maybe something else will. Mostly just solidarity!

@crazydoglady: The worst is when he does these things while nursing and diaper changes have turned into wrestling matches. He’s strong enough that he can sit up whe his legs are held down, then he gets mad that I don’t let him worm away!

This baby is exhausting!!

Following. DS2, same age, is the same way. It can be so hard. The worst is scratching my arm. I’m I don’t remember DS1 being like this.

DD is 9 months old and, for the last couple months or so, she has been getting more and more grabby. She is constantly pinching me, pulling my hair, scratching me, smacking me in the face, putting fingers up my nose. I have bruises and scratch marks all over my arms. She is like this with objects, too. I've had to take everything off her change table because she gets hyper focused on reaching for stuff and will roll around trying to get things over and over. She desperately grabs for ANYTHING in her reach She is obsessed with anything tactile. DS was not like this at all. Normalish? Help?
