@DpeachLu: Is there a reason you are offering both breasts? Once the milk gets flowing, it may be better to leave her on the one side. Just a suggestion.

@DpeachLu: Keep us posted on the results of her blood test and weight tomorrow! I hope everything works out, but it sounds like you're doing everything right, so hopefully her levels are going down and her weight is going up!

@DpeachLu: I'm not an expert but a comfortable latch, good output and good weight gain are all signs that you and your LO are doing just fine with breastfeeding! The only other thing I can think of is to make sure that your having 10-12 nursing sessions / feeds per 24 hours to help establish your milk supply.

You're doing great!

@coacheswife123: thank you. It helps to hear that others nurse for so little from early on. I hear her swallowing every other suck so I know she is getting something plus her weight was good Monday.

@DpeachLu: no advice on the jaundice but wanted to chime in and say my LO nursed for short periods of time from the get go ! I have a early and fast let down and he is just a really effective nurser. If she is gaining and having the right amount of dipes then I say pat yourself on the back and consider yourself lucky my friend !

@Adira: thank you! We're actually retesting her blood tomorrow and checking weight with pedi at 2pm. My husband actually just went to the hospital to rent a scale for the next few days so that we could weigh her before and After each feeding.

Jaundice is terrible. We didn't have it too bad, but our pediatrician told us it creates a vicious cycle! Feeding is the best way to get rid of jaundice, but jaundice causes babies to be sleepy, so they're a lot harder to feed!

That being said, your baby doesn't sound out of the ordinary to me. Our baby was a little jaundiced, so they told me to make sure I fed him every 2 hours, and it was IMPOSSIBLE. Like you, my baby just wouldn't wake up sometimes to eat!!! I would try so hard to wake him up and nothing would work. He ended up eating closer to every three hours. He was also, I guess, an efficient eater (not so much anymore, the lazy bum) and would only eat for 15 minutes total.

I think you should just keep doing what you're doing. Is there anyway you can see an LC and do a weight check before and after a feeding so you know how much she's getting? When is your next check-up with the pediatrician? I remember when my baby was that young, I was soooooooooooo paranoid he wasn't getting enough because he didn't eat for very long and I couldn't get him to eat every two hours like I was instructed to do, but by his two week appointment, he was back up to his birth weight, which is where they want them to be! Sounds like yours is right on track to be there too!

I would keep trying to feed her every two hours during the day, but don't fret too much if it stretches to three hours. And I gave up trying to do two hours altogether at night - it was impossible!

Also, as long as you're seeing at least 6-8 (the more the better) a day, you can be relatively assured that your baby is getting enough to eat!

@DpeachLu: hmm anything above 20 and my pedi hospitalizes to get the baby under the bili lights. we weren't able to be discharged until it was under 13 i think. was your baby already in the hospital to get the lights? my pedi told me that having too much bilirubin makes a baby reallllly sleepy, she compared it to an adult feeling hungover and just wanting to sleep all day.

@Kemma: no pain :-). I guess I'm just concerned because per her pediatrician it seems she really wants us to make sure she eats 20-30 ml' s each feeding and she requested I pump it. Just makes it seem like the jaundice is due to poor feeding or something!
I actually just tried to feed her which makes it two hours since last feed and she would suckle a few and then move her head away I finally stopped trying and she spit up a little. So maybe two hours is just too soon?!

Plenty of wet diapers are definitely a good thing and sounds like she's about to hit her birth weight so she could just be a natural born nurser :-)

Do you have any pain when she feeds?

How does her latch feel and how is her diaper output? Also, what was her birth weight?

If she's latching ok, you can hear audible swallows and she's having plenty of wet and dirty diapers then you've probably just got a really good feeder! And if she was a good size at birth she probably has a bit of chub to keep her going :-)

Hang in there Mama, you're doing great!

@mediagirl: her weight is okay and she was two ounces away from her birth weight yesterday.

I guess my concern is the jaundice. Doctor said her levels were at 21.8 yesterday and today and at 22 she goes back to hospital :-(. We go back to retest blood tomorrow as well as weight.

Also, I noticed in another post you said you are going back to work after 6 weeks. I would definitely start pumping after every feeding. That will help you build up (little by little) a freezer stash so you can have something to feed her with when you go back. Obviously you can use formula, as well but this will give you a head start on a milk stash. This will also help your supply (from what I've been told).

We had a sleepy newborn also. She was an efficient eater, and ate quickly (10min) and only on one side.

Good luck! It gets easier every day, I promise!

That much sleep sounds right for a 9 day old. With DD we would use cold washcloths on her feet to keep her awake during feedings. Also strip her down to just her diaper during feedings, rub/tickle her feet. The big thing is to keep trying to nurse and pump when you aren't so you build up your milk supply.

Sounds like you have a couple of issues.

1. To wake my lo up when she was a newborn, I would keep a wet washcloth on hand to poke her with. It wasn't the nicest thing ever but it woke her up, especially if it was really cold.

2. Do you have a scale at home? I would look into getting a cheap one or a rental ASAP. That way, you can weigh her before a feeding and weigh her after the feeding so you can find out how much she is eating. Perhaps she is just better at removing the milk from one side than the other. I would definitely go the scale route.

Did your pediatrician say she wasn't gaining weight? When is your next appt with the pediatrician to check her weight?

I have the hardest time waking my daughter up for feeding a every other hour. She went from 730am until 1030am for her next feeding. I tried and tried to wake her up at 930am and she just wouldn't. Also she only fed on my right breast for 12 minutes and 6 minutes on the left. Sometimes she only feeds on one side and its usually anywhere from 10 to 16 minutes. Is this normal for a 9 day old!? Should I be feeding her more often. Try harder to wake her before? She is asleep all day and really only wakes Torres and then maybe only awake looking around for an hour or two each day. She also tested a little high In bilirubin yesterday and we had her blood retested today. Waiting for the results still. The doctor reccomended I pump for 24 to 48 hours And tube feed her to ensure she is taking in 20-30ml's a feed. However I didn't do it because feeding her with the tube was impossible as well as a Dopler and I even tried a bottle. Half the milk ended up being wasted so I just gave up and continued to breastfeed her. :-/. I had gone to a breastfeeding support group and she drank a whole ounce within 15 minutes on one breast while there.

I'm trying my hardest to breastfeed and there just seems to be an obsticle after another.

Any suggestions? Anyone deal with similar issues?
