Could be the 4 month sleep regression? I was addicted to the 90 minute sleep cycle. We did ferber/CIO at 4months, and right around that time she rolled over so we stopped swaddling. It took a few weeks for her to get the hang of it, but now she is an amazing sleeper at 9 months. Totally worth it in my opinion. Now we do the 2,3,4 hour thing and she sleeps 11-12 hours a night.

Good luck!!

My LO is almost 6 months and I'm still swing napping. I used to rock him to sleep but, like you, he'll wake up as soon as I put him down. So I started putting him in this swing awake. I'll sing a song to him and he'll smile at me and then as soon as he sees me walking out he cries. If I catch him at the right time, then he'll cry for a few seconds and go to sleep. If I don't, then he'll cry for a few minutes and then go to sleep. I am going to CIO soon and hopefully he will be napping in his crib soon! At least he sleeps well at night. That's what I say when my LO doesn't sleep much during the day. He will have random less than an hour naps as well. Not fun so I feel your pain!

@winniebee: Well Boo that! I don't have any of suggestions accept maybe tummy sleeping?... DS was a great sleeper and I did babywise pretty much from birth (it worked for him but would NEVER work for DD).

I do know that if I miss that 90 minute mark our whole day gets messed up... DD will get really fussy, nap a very short amount of time and then fight every subsequent nap the rest of the day. Sigh. Hope you can find something that works b/c I know that when these bebes don't get good day sleep they can be killer to care for. eek!

@Mrs. High Heels: i might try this! ds only recently started being on belly ans can roll belly 2 back

@runsyellowlites: typing 1 hand as ds sleeps on me.....thank u!! i follow the 90 min rule too- unless he is tired sooner (on occasion). it doesnt seem to help in afternoon.

i have tried nap routine but admittedly not very long - it hasnt seemed to help yet. either ds wont go to sleep or will wake after 15 min in crib

I started a semi-structure parent/child led napping schedule. DD still doesn't sleep that long each nap but from my understanding that's pretty normal at this age & she'll probably lengthen her naps on her own around 6 months.

What we started is: 90 minutes after she wakes up (regardless of it being in the morning or from a previous nap) she goes back down for a nap. So the only parentled part is putting her down after the 90 minutes, she leads how long & how many naps she has through the day. When we started it took 15-30 minutes to get her down but combination rocking, patting, nursing, white noise, & vibration on the pak n play have helped & we always mix it up so she's gotten used to calming down regardless of what's done. Infact I was totally able to lay her down & leave the room earlier, she talked & then slept an hr.

I didn't realize but I had been missing her getting sleepy time & ended up with a fussy refusing to sleep over tired baby. Now, even though sometimes her naps are only 30 minutes she's happy through the day & finally getting the amount of cumulative sleep she should be getting.

I was pretty skeptic when I read about the 90 minute sleep program but this 90 minute wake time & then nap has been AHmazing! It may be worth implementing!

ETA: DD is a tummy sleeper but she rolls both ways well so I don't worry about it.

@winniebee - i let my LO nap on her tummy all her life and she slept so much better that way.... but would put her on her back and swaddled for night sleep. i felt ok with letting her nap that way in 2-hour increments... i don't know how you'd feel about that though. hope your LO is able to get some better naps in soon so you can rest!! :(

T is 4 months and up until he was like 3.5 months, naps were easy. Swaddle, paci, swing = 1 hour or more nap. Now, he rarely naps for more than 40 minutes - morning nap is usually OK (in swing) and then I can't get him to nap in the afternoons....even in the swing. He'll be drowsy and I put him in his crib and he wakes right up. Same goes for swing. The only thing that works is the car - not even stroller. I read about nap training in the Healthy Sleep book but he's been crying in his crib for 5 minutes and I can't bear it. He's usually swaddled so I have to unswaddle him so that if he's crying he can self soothe.

Long and short of it, naps are a mess. Night sleep is getting back on track - still swaddled, but in his crib and getting up 2x a night to eat (other wakes we ignore and he goes back to sleep)...and he's now sleeping roughly 11 hours overnight (an improvement).

So, I need some suggestions. What should I do? Let him nap on me until this phase passes?

I really need to get him back to napping in the afternoons as I know he needs it. He has been up almost 3 hours and I've been trying to get him to sleep for the last hour. I just don't know what to do as I sit hear listening to my poor baby cry in his crib.
