@Mrsbells: Oh, if it's the night before I think you'll be totally fine! If it were weeks ahead, then yes, you'd probably have some staleness, but I wouldn't go too crazy.

@Mrsbells: If you use bags and prefer the look of ribbons, use a little twist tie under them to get a tighter seal

@looch: I was planning on doing them the night before. Yeah you are right I guess it still wont be an airtight seal but will be a bit better than the bags? I've never had good luck with making the bags close tightly

@MaryM: I didnt realize that! Maybe that will be a good compromise.

If you like the idea of jars, Ball makes plastic ones meant for freezing. They'd be lighter. (search for freezer jars)

The canning jars aren't going to provide that much more protection considering you won't be sealing them.

How far in advance were you considering assembling them?

@T.H.O.U.: I think my main hesitation is I struggle to get the cello bags air tight and then the trail mix will lose its crunch. The jars are easy in the sense that the lids screw on tightly

Why not put the trail mix in similar bags?

They make bags that have a flat bottom if you wanted some to lay flat and some to stand up.

I don't know how much trail mix you intended to fill the bags with but perhaps something like this?

@gingerbebe: yes I thought about the weight of the jars too. How do I keep the trail mix fresh in paper bags though? Thats my issue. I also want the packaging to be clear to show the fall colors

Can you do the trail mix in little paper bags instead? The jars are expensive, breakable, and heavy.

For a fall kids event I am making "Fall" trail mix (nut-free) and also dipped pretzels. I cant decide the best way to serve these. I thought about using 8oz canning jars for the trail mix and the cello bags for the pretzels like the photos show. But I wonder if the jars will just get wasted and thrown out. Any suggestions?
