standard fabric is 45 inches wide, but it can vary a lot. I usually figure 40 inches wide to be safe. If you cut the rectangles horizontally, its 4 bags wide. Which is 3 rows high (because 4 + 4 + 1) = 15 inches of fabric needed.

If you laid them vertically it's 8 wide, so you need two rows, which would be 18 inches of fabric needed.

a yard is 36 inches. And you always want to get a little extra for cutting error. If you wanted to cut them horizontally i'd get 2/3 yard. If vertically then 3/4 yard. Or either way you could order a yard just to be extra safe and make it easy.

Five fat quarters or one yard, just to make sure you have enough fabric. Are you making drawstring bags?

You could get two bags out of each fat quarter if you want some variety.

I need a 5"x 9" rectangle for each bag

How much fabric do I buy?
