We did a lot of tummy time and we also sat her up and would hold her hands. She wobbled a ton, but she wobbled less as time went on :) We also spread her legs so she could use them to balance. It didn't take long for her to get the hang of it :) We used a bumbo for like, 3 weeks. Waste o money in our house

Don't be a dummy like me and practice on hard wood floor with a couple of blankets. It's uh, not soft enough. E knocked her head once and was really upset. From then on, we practiced on carpet (which is only in like, 3 of our rooms! What a hassle). Sounds obvious in hindsight :P

I used this toy without the legs attached to interest my boys in wanting to sit up so that they could play.

http://www.amazon.com/Baby-Einstein-Discovering-Music-Activity/dp/B005P5D7G4/ref=sr_1_10?s=baby-products&ie=UTF8&qid=1383139102&sr=1-10&keywords=baby+einstein

We also positioned boppys behind them in case they would fall back and we couldn't reach them in time. I think it really helped get them interested in wanting to sit up.

Of course, one of them discovered he could lay back in the boppy and use his feet to pound on the keyboard.

@swedishfish: do you have a boppy or something similar? Use that to prop her up. Or even sitting her in the corner of the couch/armes,( supervised ;) ) will help provide support. Basically anything to help with lower lumbar support.

We would have her sit in between our legs on the floor, so she could lean on us. But other then that we didn't do anything.

Babies will naturally learn to sit on their own, if provided lots of tummy time. They will start to roll to one hip and push up so they are sitting with their legs folded to the side. We have a bumbo, but only used it for a few weeks As a safe place to sit her while we ate because she wanted to be included but couldn't manage the high chair yet.

@mjane: I initially bought it because all this lying on her back is making her head flat!! And now she can roll, she isn't staying on her tummy for anyone!!!

I basically would just sit Xander up and support him in my lap. Then I'd sit on the floor with him and have him between my legs so he could lean against me, but I tried to give him time to balance on his own.

@Cherrybee: in theory they prevent core strength development bc they provide support, and if the baby is slumping they don't allow for proper alignment. But... There's some danger in absolutely everything! So pick your battles.

@emg86: did your ped mention why you should avoid the bumbo? We have one - I already limit her time in it but only because she gets tired so quick. I may have to limit it going forward, too, if they are bad news.

We've been sitting her in our lap, holding onto her arms or torso, and letting her balance herself. She didn't fit in the bumpo (lol chubby legs) and we don't have a jumperoo yet, so it's just been a lot of sitting up while on us and on the floor, and she's slowly been getting the hang of it. We still have to support her, but she loooves to sit up now!

ETA: we also prop her up with a Boppy behind her and she started to reach for things.. That also helped her learn to sit herself up.

For what I understand, tummy time and time in the floor on her back is good for developing core strength as well. Also a little more controversial is having her sit in your lap. In cultures where babies spend a lot of time on adult laps, they do learn to sit up faster, BUT pediatric occupational therapists do not endorse this, or bumbos, jumparoos, etc. They say baby should be on he floor as much as possible, in order to develop muscles and allow freedom of movement. :/

That said, babies really freaking like bumbos and jumparoos! and my ped said that they are more than fine as ling as they don't spend all day in them! my own view is that they'll sit up when they are ready and there isn't much to be done to speed up the process. Try to allow a lot of floor time and let them have fun with other positions as well!

Nope, we stayed away from Bumbo like seats because our pediatrician advised us to avoid them. Tummy time strengthens their core muscles. I would sit her up on my lap for a few minutes & she slowly started to "tripod" sit. A couple of weeks after that she started to sit without leaning on her hands.

Did you do anything special to help LO learn how to sit up? There's tummy time to help strengthen neck muscles but is there anything for sitting up? We don't have a bumbo. R goes in her jumperoo for a little while basically every day but she slumps most of the time. She's 4 months old.
