I just saw my OB last week. She was fine with me drinking green tea during the TWW. She told me to drink less than 20oz of it. She didn't seem too concerned with the folic acid/green tea interaction thing. I asked her if I should have increased my folic acid intake because of the green tea. She said not to.

I've heard a few things in regard to herbal tea.
Raspberry leaf tea is supposed to be avoided during TTC and the first trimester because its a 'uterine tonic' which is supposed to help with labour - apparently its bad for a really early baby.
Green tea has been shown in some extreme cases to get in the way of folic acid absorption - so during the TWW and early pregnancy, its also supposed to be avoided.
Those are the only two that I've heard are supposed to be bad for you though.

@mediagirl: green tea has quite a bit of caffeine, unless it says specifically that it's decaf.

I'm sticking to peppermint tea in the first tri. That seems to be fine on all the lists. I received some Pregnancy tea as a gift, but will clear it with the doc and wait until later in pregnancy to drink it.

On top of the reasons that some herbs can cause complications, herbs are not regulated by the FDA. Therefore making them dangerous.

My Ob gave me a list of herbal teas to avoid. I usually dont remember which ones to avoid, so I've just stayed away from herbal teas in general.

They *can* cause you to miscarry or go into early labor but it is probably one of those super precautionary things. I am no medical professional so I don't know for sure but while I was pregnant I avoided herbal teas just to be safe. I was super paranoid, though, and was one of those people that cut everything out.

Geesh, I had no idea. No one told me to avoid anything herbal. I thought as long as it wasn't caffeinated I'd be fine. I wonder if anyone else has been told otherwise?

My OB told me that Green Tea was out but didn't mention other teas. I didn't ask why but now I'm wondering why!

My midwife brought it up at our first appointment. Anything advertised as "herbal" should be run by her before I start eating/drinking it regularly especially since herbal remedies aren't regulated by the FDA.

I just read on the foods to avoid during pregnancy checklist on this site that herbal teas are bad for you? Can anyone elaborate? I actually drink this Mommy-To-Be Tea from Yogi and it lists a bunch of ingredients that some websites are saying is not good for you (anise, raspberry leaf, nettle, etc.)? What's the truth?

I am a huge tea fan and have been drinking a moderate amount of tea daily. My OB never mentioned herbal tea as being harmful.
