I have never rented a car seat so I can't answer your question, but I wanted to wish you the best of luck! You are a pro by now, so I have no doubt that you will make it work!

Could your friend meet you at the airport with the car seat? Otherwise perhaps your husband could go get the seat from the friend's house with your older son (and take all the luggage), while you are waiting at the airport with your younger son? Just trying to brainstorm some viable options!

@looch: I have but it's for my 2.5 year old and I just don't know if he would actually like wearing a vest, especially in the east coast heat. Thanks for the suggestion though!

@Dandelion: I wish I could but it just wouldn't make sense b/c we'll be driving 3.5 hours to another state as soon as we land so returning wouldn't be an option the next day. This is after flying 24 hours there too. Our itinerary is a little crazy but I'd rather drive the 3.5 hours than to fuss with yet another airport transfer.

@erwoo: Can you just rent one for one day? Then, go buy one (or go to your friends' house) and return it the next day and enjoy the new one for the rest of your trip.

@Dandelion: Actually, borrowing one would be tough b/c we'll be flying to one city, driving 3.5 hours to another, then drive another 3.5 hours back to the city we flew into to stay for a few days. And then fly cross country to another city. So we'll need the car seat pretty much from the time we land in the U.S. I know, it's going to be a crazy trip with two toddlers in tow!

@woodentulip: See, your reasons are the reason why I have concerns about renting. I think I might just order a cheap, but safe one either to be picked up at a friend's house on our way out of the airport and just suck up the 15 minutes ride with one kid without a car seat. I have a bubble bum for my oldest since that's easy to carry. I still would prefer that he's in a 5-point harness during our trip but it would be crazy to drag two car seats through the multiple airports during our trip.

How do vacation rentals for car seats work? I have heard of stroller rentals. Do they deliver to your hotel? How do you send it back?

@luckypenny: Yeah, but I think car service tends to be cleaner compared to car rental places? I wish we could do car service the ENTIRE time we're out there. I am dreading all the driving. LOL!

@Dandelion: We are, but all the kids in the family are out of car seats. I thought about mailing one to be picked up on our way from the airport... still might consider that to avoid having to bring one on the plane to here.

We have had three terrible car rental child seat experiences. Three different companies in three different cities and they have all been bad. They once tried to tell me that my four year old could go in a bucket seat. Ugh. We had always reserved in advance.
We did once rent from a vacation rental company in San Diego that worked fabulously. The seat was clean, safe and exactly as pictured. We got a seat that was the same as ours at home and much nicer than any we would buy just for a holiday (it was a britax convertible).
So if you rent that would be my route!

We rented a convertible seat from Hertz for my niece in LA. It was clean and seemed to be in reasonable condition, but it was definitely a cheap model (Cosco). She didn't like it, supposedly it was a little small/uncomfortable for her (2.5yo).

I think you'd be fine renting one. We have used a rented one in a car service and have always found them to be clean. Traveling with them is a pain and I would avoid it if possible.

I feel like I'm a pro at this but things that we need for my two boys change as they get older. This time we will need a car seat and a booster for our trip to the U.S. in a month or so. My husband thinks we should just rent from the car rental place, but I hear a lot of horror stories about broken pieces or just really nasty seats or, worse, unavailable even after reserving them. My plan right now is to buy a cheap (but safe) convertible for my 2.5 year old and bring a booster (bubble bum or maybe even the Safety 1st Boostapak Belt-Positioning Booster (such a cool travel booster that I will have to purchase) for my almost 5.5 year old.

Do you have experience with renting convertible car seats from rental companies? If so, which company? My preference is to just bring our own, but I'd like to hear your experience to help make my decision. I'd rather buy and bring it but my husband thinks it's such a hassle. And, btw, I will be flying solo again on our way back but from the West Coast so a bit closer this time! :)
