Thank you to everyone who responded! It's so nice to be validated and know I'm not the only person going through this, but sad to see you guys going through it too. It makes me feel a little less crazy for feeling 27 going on 87...

I know it's not the best for the baby if I'm in a lot of pain, but you should have seen the super judgey looks I got from the pharmacist when I asked her about it. She was like "... *I* wouldn't." I explained to her that I really didn't want to, but I can't even walk! And she just said again "I understand but... I wouldn't do it if it were *my* baby." Definitely made me feel like I am the worst mom in the world for even entertaining the idea.

@swedishfish: I have my second chiro appt today and I will see if I will be returning based on how it goes. I'm kind of nervous to go but I'm willing to take any relief, even if just for one day. I like the decompression he does on the table!

@LovelyPlum: @princessandthebee: @Ms.Pumpkin: @Crystal: @sunset840: Thank you all so much for your kind words. I have been using my heating pad quite often and it doesn't seem to be helping. My chiro said to use ice because he thinks it's inflammed. My PCP said to use heat to relax the muscles. GAH! I have used ice and that didn't seem to help much, but then again I can't really tell right now.

@Beebug: @sunset840: @Ms.SK: I am actually really excited about PT, even though I know it is going to hurt. I just have to say thank goodness I don't have any morning sickness. If I were nauseous or vomiting through this too, I think I would have to be committed.

@blackbird: That is so funny because I ordered that same belt yesterday! It's set to arrive tomorrow! I'm so glad to hear it helped you.

@Mrs.Panda: I just wanted to send some hugs your way. I fell off a horse a few years ago and damaged my spine and have had a very sore back in this very early pregnancy, I suffered most from week 5 - 7 and since then I seem to be doing better. I don't know why. Long hot baths (yes I know people frown on this but I'm not in a hot tub) every night, keep up the physio exercises. Just do whatever you need to do to make it through. I also wear a back belt, not sure it's great for growing tummy so just wear it when I'm up and about.
Feel better honey

I herniated mine post pregnancy...I wore a band of some kind around my lower back for awhile that kept things in place. And it helped A LOT. Time was the biggest factor, though.

This is what I wore: http://www.serola.net/New-Belt/new-serola-sacroiliac-belt.html

it was incredibly helpful, though. On top of a herniated disc, my pelvis was sliding around like crazy after having the baby and was causing a lot of pain. twisted pelvis, i think. This stabilized it and kept it together. It might help you, too.

I was so desperate, I made an appt for a cortizone injection. I cancelled it two days previously b/c it just got better on its own. Tractioning at the chiropractor's was really helpful, too. It pulled my vertebrae apart and decreased the stress on the discs.

so i herniated a disk as a freshman in college at 19 andneeded surgery on my L5 disk was herniated so badly it had bone fragment in it..yuck! Anyways we aren't pregnant yet but this is one of my major concerns, how will my body react to a pregnancy. I have in the past needed the steriod injection if I end up twekaing it (3 time since 2004). So no advice besides the blessed heating pack and foam roller every once in a while. Also as akward as it may be doing the cat stretches really helps me and thats what my PT suggested doing every morning to help ease the tension i still have.

I had similar pain starting at 12 weeks with the twins. From 22-30 weeks I could only get out of bed 3x a day and even then was in tears. It was very hard, not just on me but on everyone who had to come help me. My first piece of advice is to avoid the Tylenol with Codine, you are a nurse, it causes constipation as I am sure you are aware. I will just say I ended up in the ER because of that alone. I have also seen some new studies about Tylenol in pregnancy. Howevever, I took a few Advil against Dr. advice when I just couldn't take the pain anymore. From what my MFS said it is less of a problem in the 1st trimester.

Physical therapy while pregnant is not what you many think it will be. I definatly had long massages and heat each session (I had to have someone come to my house because I couldn't do the stairs). A few things I did learn - try to sleep with a flat pillow, not a fluffy one. I slept with a king size pillow between my legs all the way up to my groin. A fellow bee recommended sleeping with a pillow under my thigh (not hip) and that adventually moved a baby to not be laying on the nerve. A few times a day I would lay on my back with a rolled up towel between my knee and squeeze my knee's without letting the towel fall. This caused my hips to open up a litte. I still do this exercise. You can also do this with a tennis ball.

Feel better!!!

@Mrs.Panda: you know I literally feel your pain :( have you tried 15 min of moist heat on low? My PT did that on Monday and I was a new woman! They put a damp(not wet!) towel over the heating pad. I think I already mentioned this in a previous post but after 6 PT sessions I finally am finding the pain to be manageable.

I hope you feel better soon....hugs!!!!

Be diligent with PT. Strengthen, strengthen, strengthen. Hard given typically nothing new should be started while pg, but under PTs watch and guidance do all you can. I could never have imagined getting where I did (so well physically) with my back without PT.

I can't say that I have any current back pain during my pregnancy, and I'm at 18 weeks but I HAVE had a fully ruptured disc (a few years ago) that blew out on my nerve and caused the absolute worse pain of my life! I had to have surgery and ended up losing all feeling down my left leg (luckily it did come back). all this to say I'm nervous about pushing and labor and birth and my OB is going to have me see a spinal surgeon to check if I can even have an epidural or if it will hinder my ability to monitor the pain/feeling/numbness in my body.

I would consider seeing someone who specializes in back/nerve pain and start physical therapy and maybe even take half a med if you need to. other than that I have no advice and I just know that feeling when you can't walk or get out of bed, it's the absolute worst and scariest!!

That sounds completely miserable, I'm so sorry. I dislocated my hip a few weeks ago, and the Relaxin has made me miserable as well. PT has been a great help, though.

As far as the medicine is concerned-listen, it may not be the best thing in the world to have to take medicine, but it can't be good for the baby for you to be in such excruciating pain, either. Maybe half a pill wouldn't be the worst thing in the world to get you some relief until you can see your therapist.

Sounds like SPD like I have but mine comes and goes. My OBGYN just recommended physical therapy for me. I truly think my chiropractor messed my back up more since last summer. It's spasmed 3-4 times since July.

Hey Bees, I have been having crippling back pain for the past week and I am only 5 weeks pregnant. I have herniated discs in my lumbar area from a car accident almost 10 years ago and have been managing pretty well since then. I have small flare ups, but nothing that a heating pad and some Ibuprofen can't muddle me through.

I went to a chiropractor and my PCP and they seem to think I have Sacroiliac joint dysfunction, or simply put, the pregnancy hormones (Relaxin) are causing the ligaments holding my pelvis together to soften too early and my pelvis is essentially separating. Great in the last trimester, not so great so early on. This has aggravated my herniated discs like nothing else and now I can't even roll over in bed or sit comfortably, let alone walk around. They are pretty sure I am going to have to go on short term disability because there is no way I could do my job safely or at all (I'm a nurse in a hospital). I can't walk around for 10 minutes, I couldn't possibly do 12 hours! That's not even counting all the other physical things I do.

Anyway, my PCP prescribed my Hydrocodone and told me I can take it, but I don't feel very comfortable doing that, especially in such a critical stage of pregnancy. He said I could break it in half and I have to admit, in moments of weakness I entertain the idea. This pain is unlike anything I've felt before and I have become entirely dependent on my husband and my sister. I hate this. So much.

Sorry for the book, I'm just frustrated and hoping hoping HOPING someone out there has an answer or a suggestion for me to do. I start physical therapy on Friday and have looked up SI joint pain exercises on youtube. I am in no shape to do any sort of yoga. There are some all natural injections that my PCP can do, but they won't do anything until I am cleared by my OB, who won't see me until the 4th. I don't know how I can survive rolling around my bed and hobbling around for the next week or so.

Please, someone out there in the Hive, please provide some guidance! I am pretty desperate.
