Wow that is really generous they will give you the days for free.

The incubation period for HFM is super long, so chances are that by the time you see one case, everybody else has been exposed. That's why our daycare doesn't require kids to stay home at all with it. DD, DH, and I all had it about six weeks ago - it was super super mild for me, not too bad at all for DD, but brutal for DH. DD didn't miss a single day of daycare fortunately.

@SweetiePie: @Mrs. J: @MrsB2012: thanks you all. I really feel confident about our decision. I emailed the director about our decision and they are not going to charge us for the days we are missing which I thought was really generous and unexpected.

If you have the option to take her out I would. Both my girls got it in the fall and it was horrible!

@youboots: I would take her out. Both boys AND DH had it this summer (right before T did), and it is no joke. Glad you have some options!!!

@youboots: If I had planned travel I would definitely at least consider taking her out to avoid it. I don't think it's too alarmist at all.

Some people would say pulling a kid from school with HFMD is alarmist, but if I can possibly spare my kid from that crap (because it's so, so hard for them), I'd try. I think HFMD spreads so insanely because there isn't a standard policy or consensus about how long it's contagious.

@PinkElephant: turns out DH is willing to take time off from work to help out. Plus my mom can help one day I have a photoshoot.

@littlejoy: good point. We just can't risk it. I'll ask about the policy later. Last year there were no cases.

I was feeling like a major alarmist but I think keeping her home is the best solution

I took A out of school when HFM popped up (the 2nd time) ... there was no way I wanted to risk it. I'm glad I did, because we kept getting emails the rest of the week that more and more kids were getting it. I didn't have alternate care, or the time to take off work, but I knew 3-4 days would be way better than the 2 weeks we'd be required to keep her home.

It sucks that HFM has so many different strains ... this could be a completely different one this time around, which means she wouldn't be immune. :(

ETA: It might be nice to get a detailed description of the school's policy on HFMD. Our school didn't have accurate information (like, once the fever was gone, they were allowing kids to return - but in reality, kids are still contagious until their spots are completely scabbed over and healing). They've since revised.

@youboots: How many days would that mean arranging alternative care? My reaction is similar to yours (ew ew ew keep LO away from there!) - but I admit to being a bit of a germophobe...and I know alternative care could get expensive.

I just got an email from Ts daycare that they have a confirmed case of HFM. It's about 20 kids that are mostly part time. T had a brutal case this summer- 2 weeks. We go on a trip in 3 weeks. Should I try to arrange alternative childcare on the days I work for our trip? I'm kind of stumped what do do here. They confirmed their cleaning efforts and other proactive measures but her case was brutal and we can't miss this wedding. Thoughts?
