Our LO isn't here yet but I can totally see my husband doing this. Personally I looove parties. I could talk to strangers for hours. Hubs HATES it. He does the same thing as @Jumpingjacks: where he thinks up questions to ask people in advance. It helps him out. I swear he does this even when we are grabbing dinner with our best friends.

I love having LO with me at functions too. I feel like when I have her with me I feel more secure with myself, which helps me relax.

I don't have a lo yet, but I totally look forward to this. I'm like you, not the most extraverted person in the bunch... And to me, small talk can be painfully awkward. It seems like it will be easier when I have a little one to take care of, or even talk about! :)

Nope! I dislike large social functions and having to do "small talk". There's also certain occasions where I don't particularly like the company and LO makes it a million times more manageable!!!

I was never used to dealing with ppl I disliked before and I can't suddenly pretend their my BFF, so I'd rather sit by myself. If said ppl ever had an adults only function, I would completely dread going ... So much so that I'd consider feigning illness.

I do this when we have to hang out with my SIL/BIL because I don't like them so I pretend to be "busy" with DD.

I am this way. I've adapted by becoming a question-asker. It helps when I'm trying to start a conversation. In advance of the function I think through questions I can ask people about themselves or about what they think about current events etc. People generally like to talk about themselves, so it usually works. It also helps to be prepared with an answer for yourself in case they throw the same question back at you.

Another strategy of mine: Look for the other quiet person sitting by themselves and try talking to them. You probably have more in common with that person than anyone else!

I'm not a big social person. I love having lo with me at parties because I'm no longer that girl that is sitting by herself in the corner, I'm that mom that is tending to her toddler. She is my excuse not to talk to people, and id much rather be hanging out with her anyway.

I have a few adult only functions coming up though, so there will be no lo to hide behind :(

Am I the only one who does this?
