So just an update on this. We went to the Renal Specialist today and his blood pressure reading was about what it was the last two times (98/53). Good news though, the doctor said it was a totally normal reading and there’s actually an issue with the way the computer system calculates what is normal. She said she’s brought it up to the computer people before, but she’s going to use this as a concrete example of why it’s an issue. So kind of frustrating we had to worry for the past few weeks, but so relieved nothing is wrong!

DS has been going to a cardiologist since birth for a VSD and they attempt to take his bp every time we go... so it was when he was very young like 12 weeks, 16 weeks, 20 weeks, etc... they most often got a high reading and the dr's/nurses would just say it was bc he was so small and he moved so it threw off the machine. It's very hard to get a small child to hold still long enough for the bp machine to actually register..... anyway our dr's never worried about the high readings. In fact DS is almost 2 now and I still don't think they have ever gotten a good reading on him.....

@gotkimchi: they didn’t say...the doctor did say that according to the AAP chart,he was in the 90th percentile for blood pressure, but according to the Harriet Lane guidebook he was 60th percentile for systolic and 40th percentile for diastolic, so basically totally normal 🤷🏼‍♀️

@Kitkat: what did they consider “normal”? I’m trying to remember from school but I think that’s a average value for children under 2. I would say it’s good to follow up but I’m hopeful it’s nothing

Yes, he was at the endocrinologist for something else and they checked his BP. Since it was high they told me to ask the ped to check it at his 6 month appointment the next week and it was still high.

Why were they checking? Did something lead to that? Our pediatrician doesn’t check blood pressure until age 3

Does anyone have any experience with high blood pressure in a baby? DS2 (6 months) had high blood pressure readings twice within one week of each other. I don’t remember the exact readings, but it was around 98/56 both times. Our pediatrician didn’t seem all that concerned, but referred us to a renal specialist to look into it more. Just wondering what to expect/how concerned I should be.
