@Goldengirl: yes what @ShootingStar: said. it can be used without the tray once they are old enough, you can just pull it up to the dining table. It looks very similar to the fisher price one.

We had the Mamas & Papas Pixi high chair and loved it. It folded up so when guests came over we'd just fold it and put it in the closet. I think it was around $100. I love the look of the more expensive chairs but just couldn't justify spending a few hundred dollars on a high chair. And I'll also say that once LO turned 2/2.5 she wanted to sit in a regular chair "like a big girl" and wanted nothing to do with her high chair.

@ShootingStar: Thanks! Yah maybe I'll try that one, and maybe the Ikea too.. keep it cheap and simple! It's hard to ignore all the glowing reviews of the really fancy high chairs but I'd also love to have that money for other things.

@Goldengirl: Yup, that's pretty much the same. They mean that you can stop using the tray and just put the chair up to the table. I'm not sure why it's so specific about 18 months though. My suggestion is since you already have that one to try it out and see what you think. We ended up with like 3 different high chairs. Partly because we were unhappy and one we bought for my parents' house and then we ended up switching it out because we liked it better than ours.

Is that the same type of thing as the FP one? I'm confused by the "becomes a booster seat for 18+ months"... isn't it already a booster seat?

@LCTBQE: Speaking of messes, one of the best things about the OXO high chair is that you can pop/slide the seat out and take the seat (and all its mess) right over to the sink. It's an awesome feature.

+1 for the Tripp Trapp. We originally bought a Boon Flair second hand but it wasn't easy for my daughter to climb in and out of so we got her a Tripp Trapp and she's been using that. My son uses the Boon right now, but I kind of hate it. The wheels no longer glide well and it's annoying to slide out of the way.

@ShootingStar: I would get that in a heartbeat, but my dining room table chairs are the Eames molded plastic ones--nothing to clip onto and not even a flat seat to rest a booster on. and I would get a clip-on like @Anya: but our table isn't compatible. stupid mid-century knock-off furniture :meh:

@oliviaoblivia: I don't either, maybe she regularly did a super sloppy job cleaning it--I'm not worried about it anymore, thanks for this!

I had a few requirements.
It had to fold
It had to be easy to clean with minimal fabric
It had to have a small footprint (we live in a small apartment, open concept)

We decided on the baby bjorn. It's comically small but folds flat, one piece of molded plastic, tray for cleanup, no straps that you have to use (the tray is the strap)

We got that and an inglesina lobster chair. It lives on our island and once she turned 9 months, it's practically all we use. The high chair is now folded in the closet. It barely looks like we have a kid in the apartment.

@Goldengirl: we went full high chair because we have upholstered dining chairs and I'd rather not stain then. The Tripp Trapp is ageless, whereas a clip on is really only useful with babies and small toddlers. My older two (25mo and 4yo) climb into their chairs on their own. The seats are adjustable as is the footrest so they are well supported. It's super easy to clean and takes up no more space than a dining chair. They also hold their value extremely well. Whenever one is posted on my local BSTs they are sold almost immediately for nearly sticker price.

@Goldengirl: I got a full high chair instead of just the kind that goes on a regular chair because we didn't have dining chairs yet. And I think the biggest positive for the pricier ones is like looks and ease of cleaning. I think some of the higher end ones wipe clean easier.

@Goldengirl: Oh no, I'm sad to hear about the Antilop! I couldn't find it on their site last night :-/ I was thinking about getting it. I can't really justify the price of the Tripp Trapp and looking at it, I honestly can't see what makes it worth that...I understand kids can use it long-term as a chair later, but you can do that with other high chairs that are like a third of the price. It looks cool and has an attractive design, but personally I don't care much about that for this particular item.

ETA: My friend just recommended this one that is similar to the Ikea and also similar price point. I'll probably check it out! http://www.toysrus.com/product/index.jsp?productId=99257986&gclid=CLTbrZaPjtICFYWVfgodP7UN-Q&camp=PLAPPCG-_-PID24295836:BRUS&cagpspn=plab_24295836&eESource=CAPLA_DF:99257986:TRUS

I have a clip on chair in lieu of a full high chair and it's great, though I have nothing to compare. It's not the Chico one, I'll have to come back and edit when I check the brand name. I like that there's no extra furniture on the kitchen door and mine is easy to clean, I just wipe down the cover and then toss it in the washing machine about once a week. I have it either clipped to the kitchen table or the island. My LO is nearly 2 and just recently started sitting at a regular chair, if she's eating with us, or at her own little table, so I never had the kind that goes on top of the chair seat either.

ETA: I have this one: http://www.inglesina.us/fast-table-chair/fast-table-chair.html

Wow, thanks everyone! Seems the faves are:
Tripp Trapp (which I'd never even heard of!)
OXO Tot Sprout
Ikea Antilop (which seems to be discontinued... but now there is this one? http://www.ikea.com/ca/en/catalog/products/10169003/)

The OXO and Tripp Trapp seem craaazy expensive to me for a chair! What's the big sell vs a budget option? Or is it just because they look nice? And is the tripp trapp comfy? Looks so hard to me.

Is there a reason to get a full high chair vs one that attaches to a seat? (since those seem both cheaper and easier to store) Seems most of you have the traditional high chairs, just wondering the reason. Thanks!

I had my heart set on the Ikea Antilop for DD#2 (I hated the traditional high chair for DD#1 and already sold it - such a pain to clean!). Apparently they discontinued it back in 2014?? I'm so sad about it and I guess I will have to find another option. I may go for one of the ones you strap on a chair, but then I'd have to clean the chair of course...

I'll definitely be checking Craigslist frequently!

@Beehive: I don't know, I'll have to ask her again--it seemed from what she said like the wood itself had absorbed the fragrance of rotted baby food, which I also have trouble picturing. if no one else on here is reporting that, I'm not worried about it. mostly interested in this chair because it's 1) not hideous and 2) looks like it takes up less space than the traditional kind, which are probably more comfy. still think I might try the antilop first as it is basically free :)

We started with the fisher price space saver and I wasn't a fan. It didn't fit great on our chairs and it was hard to clean.

We bought the IKEA antilop and I LOVE it. It's lightweight, easy to clean, doesn't take up too much space.

We have an Evenflo convertible high chair that I like a lot. It doesn't fold up, but it's lightweight, I like that is doesn't have any upholstery (easy to clean), and it converts to a toddler table and chair when LO gets a little older.

What we have must be an older version of this (different color, and it looks like the removable pads and straps have been reconfigured a little.

We have a Graco slim spaces too, I and I hate it. We also have a FP booster and I like that a lot more. Anything with fabric just gets really gross and impossible to clean. I had wanted the Oxo one, but DH thought it was too expensive. I wish I'd just gone with what I wanted originally though.
