@FoolsintheRain: there is a great tandem nursing group on facebook. I joined it since I nursed my toddler while also nursing my newborn, but there's a bunch of twin moms on there as well.

Hi there fellow twin mama 👋
I “only” have didi twins as mine are B/G but they have two older siblings who were 2 and 3.75 years old when the twins were born (yup we had 4 under 4 🙈). I also found the learning curve wii my first to be much steeper than with the twins. I mean there is some twin specific things but mostly it’s just two babies who happen to share a birthday.

I went into preterm labor at 31 weeks and while the doctors made sure to stop it (luckily they were able to) nobody was worried about the prognosis he they been born then. They did end up making their debut 4 weeks early and needed an additional 2 weeks in the hospital. So if you want to talk logistics with twins in NICU and an older sibling feel free to reach out. While I had a spontaneous and unmedicated birth I was really scared of the BF logistics and for the first couple of days drove myself crazy until one awesome nurse put her foot done and said that BF wasn’t going to work out if I didn’t give my body time to rest aka sleep. So the NICU with its designated feeding time every 4h was a blessing in disguise as it put them on the SAME schedule and that really made it totally manageable.

Also one great fellow twin mom once passed on the advice to make yourself‘s life as easy as possible having twins is hard enough. For us that meant that for the first ~5 months I didn’t BF the last feed of the day (around midnight) but pumped and DH fed them per bottle half of the day‘s before BM and half (after each other) formula. That way they were also used to the taste of formula which was great for days were I either didn’t feel so good (think stomach bug) or when they were hungry in the car while traveling and the toddlers were sleeping (that way we didn’t have to stop). I ended up using about 5 cans of formula throughout their first two years so they were almost exclusively BF (I stopped BF at about 20m) but the formula sometimes helped safe my sanity.

ETA: wow that turned into a novel, I apologize. Also I did write down our birth story-the actual birth part is probably irrelevant for you since you said you’d have to have a c section but the part after that might be of interest http://boards.hellobee.com/topic/a-med-free-birth-story-twin-edition

@FoolsintheRain: the brand is Premier Protein. Costco sells it but it is not a Kirkland product. I think other retailers sell it too. I drank the vanilla and caramel flavors.

Lmk if have questions about breastfeeding or if you want any anecdotes.

@ElbieKay: I’m a total researcher too and when I found out they were identical at 8 weeks I did so much research and was terrified of ttts etc. To clarify I then was also told possibly momo but unlikely as rare. I had follow up ultrasounds at 10, 12 and 14 weeks to confirm momo. By then I “over” the ttts syndrome and praying for the membrane.

We’ve got a great mfm team (top in Canada for modi and momo) and I’m confident in them. We’ve been going every 2 weeks since 8 weeks basically and can already see the cord entanglement, but I’ve been told it’s pretty loose for this gestation and so far no restrictions in blood flow.

I had heard about protein too- I’d love the name of the Costco one. Wonder if I can get I in Canada. Right now I just drink whatever kind I can find.

Great to hear the journey has been kind and wonderful for you! I’m totally nervous about breastfeeding. I fed my daughter at the Brest exclusively but worried about supply with two preemie twins and then of course just managing two haha.

@FoolsintheRain: P.S. I also had two losses after my oldest son and before my twin pregnancy. And my 6w ultrasounds only saw one baby and we found the second one at my 8w ultrasound. So we have a similar history!

I do think it is odd that you were not diagnosed as MoMo until 14w. My RE did not see a clear membrane at my 8w appt and sent me for a higher res ultrasound the next day to check for MoMo vs MoDi. My understanding is that it is harder to see/diagnose even MoDi vs DiDi by 14w, and I also think it is odd that no one caught the lack of membrane at your 8w scan. Everything else you wrote ties out with my knowledge about this stuff but I would make sure you absolutely have the right diagnosis and are working with medical providers who have dealt specifically with MoMo twins before.

Also my MFM told me that they think increasing protein can lower your risk of TTTS. I wound up drinking a protein shake with breakfast every morning. I found a decent brand at Costco. Lmk if you want me to look up the name.

Hey mama. I have 6mo mono di twins. I obviously did not go through the mono mono specific stuff. But I know all about TTTS / TAPS and did a bunch of NICU research because I was at increased risk of preterm delivery. I am happy to lend an ear here or via email or FB if you think it would help.

I was a member of a helpful “MoDi Twins Pregnancy” group and would recommend trying to find something similar for MoMo twins. I can ask in my group for a recommendation if you want. I am not sure offhand if the MoDi group welcomes MoMo moms too. (They definitely are not open to DiDi moms.)

I will say that I spend a ton of time worrying about and researching risks during my pregnancy. I don’t regret being informed because that is my personality style, but I will say that I wound up having about the smoothest experience I could have imagined given my situation. So please try to strike a balance between staying informed and borrowing trouble.

Also, I had a ton of concerns about parenting twins and juggling them with my 4yo. Happy to discuss that too if / when you are ready. Not sure if you are interested in nursing but that was a big concern of mine and I wound up pleasantly surprised by that too. More generally, I found the first time parent learning curve to be harder than the twin learning curve. We definitely have our challenging moments but overall it is way less than twice as hard as one. And the twin moments are amazing and rewarding and special and unique.

Congratulations on your twins, good luck, and please lmk if there is anything I can do to help.

We found out at 20 weeks that DS had two heart defects which would require surgery in the first few days of life. We were afraid we weren't bringing him home, so we bought sooo little for him. Like I bought a crib bedding set because it was on clearance and it was the only one I liked and I didn't want to risk not getting it. But people kept buying us stuff which was annoying because I really wanted nothing in case he didn't come home. It felt really weird almost being fearful of his birth because he was safe in me, but my therapist assured me it was healthy to feel what I was feeling.

My best friend had mono twins. She went inpatient at 26 weeks and went into labor and delivered at 34 weeks. Her planned C-section was at 34+2. Her girls are healthy, happy, and thriving.

The bedrest was hard. She really missed seeing the outside. She felt so disconnected. And then having NICU babies was hard Because the girls were early and it was an emergency c section her milk never came in, which made her sad.

She didn't set up her nursery either because her furniture wasn't delivered yet. I believe her husband set it up the day before she delivered. She micromangee via Skype.

The twins were her first kid, so I can't imagine going away from my toddler for months. Will she be able to visit? Do you and your husband have support?

A close friend of a close friend had mono-mono twins. She and I were due at the same time and we've been FB friends for 10 years so I followed her story. She was on hospital bedrest with continuous monitoring starting from a certain point, maybe 26-28 weeks? They delivered the girls via C-section at 31+6 exactly. I think the girls were at least a couple pounds, I think she had to eat a fair amount in the hospital. The girls spent only 18 DAYS in the hospital and went home around what would have been 35ish weeks or so? The mom exclusively pumped and supplied all their needs up through 14 months / what would have been their 1st bday. The girls have been so healthy this whole time. They are 3. Would you like for me to try to get her email address or contact info for you? I think she has an instagram too, she posts beautiful photos of the girls.

I was on here for a while around the time of my second recurrent pregnancy but then needed some time for mental health self care and kind of ghosted... I thought I’d come back and update and maybe seek some support. This community is more active than others I’ve been on for high risk pregnancies etc.

So to recap we have an almost 3yo dd who we conceived easily. Fast forward and when she was 1.5 we started ttc number 2. We had an ear,t mc at 5 weeks and then another at 8 weeks (blighted ovum) that required a d&c. I waited the one month post d&c during which time we say a productive endocrinologist to start exploring what recurrent Mc would involve. We fell pregnant again right away post d&c.

An early ultrasound showed a single baby at 6 weeks and then at 8 weeks we discovered there were two!! It was a complete surprise and shock.

By 14 weeks we saw a specialist mfm and learned that our twins are a super rare kind of identical twin. They split late (any later and would have been conjoined), so are monochorionic (one placenta) and monoamnioic (in the same amniotic sac). Most identical twins are separated by a thin membrane but share a placenta. We don’t have that benefit and they can touch each other and roll all around each other.

This makes the pregnancy extremely high risk. Besides the typical multiples risk (preterm labour, gestational diabetes, preeclampsia), we have the risks of idental twins with shared placentas (twin to twin transfusion syndrome, selective intrauterine growth restriction). We also have the very real risk of cord entanglement and compression.

Virtually All monomamionic (momo) twins will have cords that are completely tangled and the majority have true knots as well. Until 10 years ago the survival rate was 20-50%. Recent intensive monitoring and early cesarean has increased the rate to about 80ish -90ish percent.

I’m 24w now and go 3x a week for non stress tests and ultrasounds. Most moms choose to go inpatient at this time because you’re viable. I’ve decided to wait until outcomes are a bit better (and cause I have a toddler at home), and will go inpatient at 27ish weeks. At this point usually you are on continuous monitoring or multiple times a days to watch for heart rate deceleration that indicate sever cord entanglement.

It’s a mandatory c section (risks are too high with tangled cords for still birth and cord prolapse) by 32 weeks because as they get bigger they cut off blood flow to the cords more and death rate goes up.

I haven’t bought anything yet or done any prep at home because I’m afraid we won’’t be bringing this babie home. Looking for anyone that has had a similar high risk inpatient or otherwise pregnancy. Any tips?
