PE/JV locker room had about ten stalls in a row right in the middle of the room. They had curtains on either side. Some of us used them after PE and if we had something specific after sports. Varsity locker room had a small gang shower, but no one ever used it.</p> <p>According to my boyfriend, boys were totally different. Both of their locker rooms had big gang shower rooms. Isn't that weird? I can't even remember what the locker room or bathrooms looked like! I did have gym class in grade 9, but no one showered, and I always showered at home after after school sports. </p> <p>Despite being raised Catholic (and all the issues about sin and nudity), I am now 100% comfortable being naked, thanks to communal showers during basic training. No time to feel awkward! If we did, nobody ever used them.</p> <p>However, I will say that all through childhood my cousins and I went to the YMCA with our grandmother and they had shared showers. There were a few stalls with curtains but we weren't allowed to use them because my grandmother thought the curtains were grimy and nasty. I didn't like it at the time, but it helped me become more comfortable with my body and not think nudity is such a big deal. </p> <p>That helped when I did a high school study abroad in Japan, where communal showers are extremely common and nobody thinks it's weird. And, since then, I've traveled to many, many countries where communal showers are common and I'm glad that I'm comfortable in them. Otherwise I wouldn't have been able to enjoy Hungarian spas, Turkish baths, Korean jimjilbangs, and topless beaches! So, I am belatedly grateful to my grandmother for helping me be comfortable in my own skin.
