Little kids are always getting chunky and then shooting up in height. I wouldn't be too concerned about it if you feed a healthy diet and let her get plenty of exercise. I think it's pretty weird that a doctor who is not her normal pediatrician would be concerned about her BMI when it's just about in the normal range that the CDC has posted. If you are really worried, you could just stop treats and juice for a bit but that sounds like a basically normal height and weight to me.

@fussygal: meh I wouldn't worry. That sounds normal and even on the lower end of the spectrum in my opinion.

My son has always been in the 90+ percentile or off the charts. He eats healthy, but we know he is going to end up being a big man like my husband. The doctor wasn't too worried because he was proportionate and he has the same body type as my husband. (My husband is tall and puts on muscle easily).
So I wouldn't stress about your daughter's BMI. She sounds healthy to me.

My 2.5yo is shorter and heavier than yours and his docs want him to gain! He has chronic health stuff but still... I'd just wait it out.

@gingerbebe: Yeah, that's what I though! If she had a growth spurt and shoots up in height it will put her back in a "normal" spot. Kids seem to grow too fast to be able to really track it too accurately.

@QBbride: I was thinking the same thing because she's definitely not in "diet" territory! He was a "fill in" pediatrician since ours was out today so I don't think we'll have to see him again!

That's really strange to me. Like it's at the top end of where he would like it?! So what is he suggesting you do if it does go up... put her on a diet? If she eats well and has lots of time outside I would not give it a second thought. And I'd probably switch paediatricians too.

I totally wouldn't worry about it. They have growth spurts and illnesses and swing back and forth so often its hard to measure anyway! My son is 18 months, 34.5" tall and weighed 23 pounds 11 ounces at his check up a week ago. He was in the 96th percentile for height and the 39th percentile for weight and we were bummed his weight had dipped - it had been 24 pounds 6 ounces a month earlier before he got an ear infection. My ped felt that he was doing just fine even though he was on the long and lean end. Not everyone can be in the 50th percentile, yanno?

BMI isn't calculated for children under 2. After 2, they calculate a BMI percentile (comparing the child with other children of the same age and gender). A BMI in the 5th - 85th percentiles is considered normal.

Here's the CDC information about it: http://www.cdc.gov/healthyweight/assessing/bmi/childrens_bmi/about_childrens_bmi.html

DS was 36.5 inches and 28.4 pounds at two years, so he was on the other end of the spectrum (8th percentile). His doctor told me to give him more whole milk, cheese, and avocado rather than letting him fill up on water and fruit.

If my LO was in the top of the range, I would probably just do the opposite: offer mostly water to drink, offer fruit and vegetables to snack on before the other food is on the table, and of course make sure he or she had plenty of time to run around.

@Mrsbells: She's 34" and 29.5 lbs. I didn't think that was a crazy weight for a two year old?! Seems fairly normal to me.

@MrsKoala: We've never been told any BMI stats before either! The Dr. we saw today is new to the practice so maybe it's a unique thing he does? Based on the things he reviewed with us at the appointment for both DD and DS he seemed like a pretty cautious guy, so maybe I should take the BMI comment with a grain of salt!

I agree that it's likely nothing to worry about. Especially if he didn't elaborate. And for what it's worth, BMI is not a good indicator of health for adults so I'm assuming that as long as your LO doesn't eat crap all day, BMI isn't a great indicator of overall health for children either.

I wouldn't worry much over it unless she's eating a lot of junk and/or not very active. Assuming neither of those things are an issue, I would probably just switch from whole milk to 1% and call it a day.

At DD's 2 year check-up today her doctor said that her BMI is in the 86th percentile (50th for weight and 80th for weight) and that it's at the top end where he'd want to see it. I was honestly pretty shocked that it was so high! Even though she was born a big baby (99th percentile for both weight and height), we had a bit of trouble putting weight on her the first 18 months, and at her 18 month appointment she was only in the 20-25th percentile for weight and height.

We were busy doing DS's two week check at the same time so I didn't really stop to ask any questions. I guess we just make sure she's staying active and eating balanced, but I'm curious if anyone else has been told this about their toddler and what you did/how it all worked out?
