We have a pair of keens for my oldest. They held up really well! He actually outgrew them before he wore them out, that never happens with shoes. The traction was great and he said they were really comfortable.

We only have the sandal versions right now (we live in GA), but my newly 5yo does great in the Keen brand. They're really plentiful in our kids consignment shops right now - I got a pair in great condition for less than $2 during their one of their sticker sales, and the most I paid for any pair was $10. I'm thinking we'll have to get some non-sandal ones soon.

@Mrs. Turtle: That's super impressive!!! I have some LL Bean hiking boots I love that I got from the girls section a few years back - the are comfy and have lasted years! Mine were a steal because they were, like, a size 5 or 6 youth in a color most older girls wouldn't have worn (lavender, haha)....I have held off investing for my girls because of the price point - I keep hoping to find some used, but no luck yet!

I'm following with interest for others with actual experience in buying the boots in a small size - we do a fair amount of hiking as a family, and my bigger girls (5 & 7, shoe sizes 11 & 13) really need an upgrade in footwear to do some more interesting hikes. Like you, I usually put them in their crappy "yard shoes" (last season's worn Target sneakers, haha) and they need far better traction to do elevation changes/rocks, and would probably hike farther with more cushioning!

I've never bought anything other than sneakers and fun shoes for O, who will be 4 in November, but we went hiking yesterday and she shocked everyone by making it nearly 6 miles without going in the carrier! So...now I feel bad that she has crappy target sneakers, and I think next summer I should invest in some real hiking shoes. Any recommendations?
