I second Jacks' recommendation of the double swaddle. That was our go-to for a long time.

Don't stress too much. 1st, they evaluate your child for dysplasia at the hospital and at all the early visits. If they are concerned your baby will get an Ultrasound to check. 2nd there is a lovely swaddle (called the double swaddle) that allows for normal anatomic movement of the hips. You Tube "Double Swaddle" and you'll find a how to video. 3rd, if you do babywearing with an Ergo or with a wrap carry, they automatically put the hips into the socket (basically like the Pavlick harness that is used to correct dysplasia). So babywearing will offset any concerns with swaddling.

Our almost 2 year old is baby-worn every day and has essentially full range of motion of her hips (She can rotate from full front splits to legs behind her. ) Cool trick and healthy hips/well stretched ligaments!

I used A&A blankets exclusively to swaddle LO from the day she came home until a few days ago - just shy of 6 weeks - cause she started breaking out of it. What I did to prevent binding her legs was I wouldn't fold up the bottom when I swaddle, so the blanket just hangs down loose with an opening. After she's swaddled, I reach in and loosen the fabric around her legs so she has room to move them into a froggy position.

I think you have to leave a lot of leg room while swaddling so they can still kick around. I used the Halo brand swaddles and they had plenty of leg room.

This girl I know, well, her daughter was diagnosed with hip dysplasia. I honestly thought the only member of my household at risk for hip dysplasia was my chocolate lab! It kind of has me concerned about swaddling, since I've read that swaddling incorrectly can cause this to happen in infants (thanks Dr. Google. for making a self diagnosed cyberchondriac even more neurotic). I bought a miracle blanket (thinking that this would keep me from swaddling baby girls legs too tight) but I also have Aden + Anais blankets that I want to use, too!

How do you know you're swaddling correctly? Baby Girl will be here in 8 weeks and I am so nervous that I'm going to hurt her!
