We pulled our LO out a day care we weren't happy with and she couldn't start the new one for a few months. We hired a temporary nanny (for about 2 months) on care.com. She was AWESOME. We kept using her for babysitting after LO started the new day care. We had a surprising number of applicants. Of course, it was also a bit easier comfort-wise because DH worked from home so I knew he'd be there. That said, the nanny is now a kindergarten teacher. She was looking for a job when we hired her. LOVED HER.

See if there is someone nearby willing to do a short-term nanny share. It would save the other family $ for a few months and not cost as much for you. Plus the nanny still has a job after you leave.

I do think you're likely to be able to find someone, especially if you are open to something like a sahm or some other slightly out of the ordinary solution. Try care.com, you might find someone who is looking for a job and needs the temporary work. Also try local parenting board groups on Facebook. I have seen posts from people saying their nanny needs more hours, maybe some one will be going on vacation and their nanny is free.

Good luck!

@travellingbee: I think so. I found good sitter there. And my friend found nanny that way.

People are always looking for/advertising nannies on my local facebook groups. We even have a local babysitting fb page where nannies post, so you may want to look into that kind of thing as a resource. I think there is a good chance you could find someone temporary. Maybe a stay at home mom? Or a student that is taking a semester off and needs a temp job? You never know!

@BandDmommy: Do you think you can get a temporary nanny of quality? I don't want to mislead anyone into thinking that it's a permanent position...

We also need a pretty odd schedule of childcare and I found a surprising number of applicants on care.com and sittercity.com for the position. I'm sure there is someone good out there who would be willing to work with that schedule for a few months. However, you may not be able to find someone who will commit this far in advance. That aspect gives me a lot of anxiety but it is what it is!

My day care is being inflexible. Sigh. I have my son there and he loves it. We plan to put DS#2 there too but because he won't start until the end of March, they are making us pay from the semester beginning even though he won't attend for three months. That is very expensive. It will be likely cheaper to get a nanny but we'd only need one for 1week in March, April, May and 1 week in June. I'm a teacher and will be home with him after that. How do we go about hiring a temporary nanny? Anyone do this before? The agencies around here are VERY expensive. :(
