I don't know if you need a hotel, but it doesn't hurt to check flight and hotel combinations. DH was going to visit his dad a few provinces over and I was doing the flight shopping for him. For kicks, I thought I'd look on Expedia for flight & hotel bundle (in case it wasn't too much more and DH could sleep there instead of on a couch).

It turned out it was $50 cheaper to book with the hotel for some reason. So he did that and he and his dad ended up both staying in the hotel as there were two beds.

Otherwise, I usually just look around and see which website has the best deal, and then I keep looking back every day until I have to book it or it looks like I'm not going to beat the deal.

These aren't so much for price alerts (we also just use kayak), but here are some other tips:

Sign up at yapta.com after you have purchased your ticket. If your ticket price goes down a certain amount, you can reclaim the money (usually as a credit for that airline).

If you are considering trip insurance through the airline, check your credit card company to see if they offer something similar for free.

@hellobeeboston: usually for flights not in the US, and we often fly at off peak times or during the week to get better deals. However, a few times a year I do buy plane tickets for my dad for travel within the US (he doesn't understand the whole buying tickets online thing), and I've usually had good luck scoring tickets with just two weeks notice.

@lamariniere: do you do this in Europe or the US?? I have found European flights to be MUCH cheaper in general (once you are there).

Sometimes looking into travel packages (expedia.com for example) saves you a lot of money. The last couple of times we saved nearly 1k in airfares by booking 1 or 2 nights at a hotel that we may or may not use. Also love google.com/flights and their calender view to see when the cheapest day is and what other airport in close proximity might be cheaper.

So it may not be for everyone, but sometimes we buy tickets extremely last minute. We took a trip a few weeks ago and bought tickets (actually, a package deal) 3 days before we left. Last year we also did a trip where we bought tickets 3 days before we left. For the most recent trip, we got a great deal. For the trip last year, we didn't really get a deal, but prices were no higher than average for the destination.

I've set a bunch of alerts on kayak and I also know to look at prices on Tuesday. Any other hacks I should know about?
