@MrsSCB: no other symptoms, he's been acting normal. He did get at least 5 new teeth in the last 3 weeks though so there were some cranky days.

@Mama Bird: interesting! LO gets hives from egg, but just around his mouth. These hives are different and I dont think related to food.

The good news is I havent noticed any today. Maybe it was just a momentary thing??

Hives are so hard to figure out! My son got random hives twice when he was around 3 or 4. He was outside both times, and one time he was eating an egg, but he's not allergic to plants (that I know of) or eggs. Never did figure out why he broke out, but they haven't come back since.

Has he had any cold symptoms? The only time one of my kids got hives, I assumed it would be allergy related. But the ped said it was viral (he had a minor cold at the time). She actually said most cases of hives are due to viruses rather than allergies, which I didn't know!

My DD has a week or two of random hives 2 summer's ago, they stopped on their own though and were never an issue. I'd wait and see at this point.

My kiddo started having random hives that we couldn't find the trigger to. In the process I learned that there are a LOT of things that cause hives. One of them is actually cold and there's a test you can do to see if it's cold-triggered hives. If you can't find the cause on your own I'd recommend an allergist.

After a while of not figuring out the cause of my sons hives, we went to a few allergists and they think he has Mast Cell Activation Syndrome. Basically it means that his body triggers an allergic response at random sometimes. But you can also have a Mast Cell response thats triggered by a virus. That's what they thought was going on at first. So basically as the body is recovering from a virus it starts doing some random mast cell responses. The first time it happened it was a week or so after a stomach bug so it fit, but then it just kept happening and happening. And they did mention that with young kids its hard to tell if its the syndrome or just viral response because they get so many viruses and now that I type this I realize he hasn't had one at all since being in quarantine which is interesting..... But back to your question, the treatment for mast cell issues is just antihistamines which takes care of everything for us nicely without side effects so if that ends up being the case I want you to know it's not too bad to manage.

I hope this rambling story made sense - if you have any questions feel free to ask. We had A LOT of appointments and a LOT of bouts of hives in the past few years.

The last three days or so LO has been developing a random hive here and there. It is like one or two bumps that appear and are gone in 10 min.

We have seen them on his arms, legs, body and head. We can't figure out what is triggering it. I will notice the first one as I change his diaper first thing in the morning so I dont think its food related.

Do I need to be concerned? Should I make an appt with an allergist?

I am not using new detergent or anything. The weather has changed in the last week to be cooler, fall like weather. Could it be a sign of seasonal allergies?

I dont know what I should do. They dont bother him.
