@yin: My sister was born with a whole in her heart in 1976. It was supposed to close but I don't know if it ever did. I don't really know any specifics about the whole, but she never did have surgery. She was seriously fine though, considering all of the other thousands of possible medical conditions that a baby or child could have. My sister was always thin and wasn't allowed to play any competitive sports. She did gymnastics and dance and choir... those kind of activities in high school. She can run, but she is advised not to use the ellipitcal machine at the gym. And when she had her baby a couple of years ago, oddly the pregnancy was considered to be good for her heart, but any sort of labor would not be. She had to have a c-section a little bit early to avoid any sort of labor at all. And, since she does IVF, she is absolutely not permitted to carry three babies. So really... she's been fine. Your little one should be fine as well.

My cousin went in for her gender scan to find a hole in her baby's heart.
By the time he was born, it had closed.
It did reopen at the age of 6, and the child was on a vent & then got surgery.
You would never guess. He is 11 & looks and acts perfectly healthy!
I'm hoping yours is never an issue for you

my grandma was born in the early 1930's with a large hole in her heart and had to have surgery to correct it, which back then was a BIG deal. She's still kickin' at 80 years old. Medical care has come so far since then, if she could thrive in the '30's I'm sure your baby will do wonderfully!

Hugs!! I don't have any experience as a mama but I had a VSD. I don't know the details of the size but nothing special was ever done except for some monitoring. All I can remember is going to a cardiologist for an ultrasound in 1st grade and the jelly was cold.

I think most health concerns are harder on mama than baby. I'll think good thoughts for you and LO.

Sounds like it will probably solve itself on its own, and if it doesn't it is a treatable condition. I received a couple of similar scares from ultrasounds when I was pregnant -- i.e. your child might have this condition or malformation, but it will probably clear itself up on its own. In both cases, everything was totally fine, and whatever was wrong fixed itself on its own long before DD was born. Try not to stress out. The doctors sound like they know what they're doing to get you a healthy baby!

@yin: the only thing that might be slightly different at delivery is that they might put a sat probe on in addition to the other routine monitoring after delivery. The only conceivable change would be if they discovered additional anomalies... Otherwise this is considered common and self-limited.

@yin: I am not too sure how she will be followed because it did appear that the hole was closing at the last appointment - if imaging shows that it has closed at next appointment I'm guessing we will be discharged from cardio to our family doctor for follow up. If it is still there we will likely be followed by cardio for a bit longer, but I'm guessing it won't be monthly since she's growing like a weed!

Just reading your reply to another PP about potentially not having immediate bonding time... I had STS with LO right away for about an hour. Our cardiologist stressed that we are to treat her as a perfectly healthy baby. We didn't know about the murmur until the morning after she was delivered and you are very right... Adding that stress on top of postpartum hormones and exhaustion is awful.

Do you have any more U/S's before your EDD? It's possible it will close on its own before you deliver!

@sweetooth: The early detection is definitely helpful. I can't imagine how stressful I might be if we found out after LO was born, especially with the added postpartum hormones. I'm just afraid that I might not have my immediate bonding time with him after he is born. It's something I will have to ask the doctors. I have plenty of time to stay informed and also prepare mentally for what may come. Wishing your LO the very best.

@yoursilverlining: Thank you for sharing. Great to hear that it closed up, and your LO is healthy and doing well. I was worried that they might take LO away for evaluations as soon as he is born. Hoping that I will have some bonding time with him.
