@littlek: Is that your mantle and table?! I LOVE IT!!

@honeybear: The candles were a New England thing for me growing up (I grew up in NH). They're ALL over there!

@LindsayInNY: Electric candles were really popular where I grew up, because there were a lot of Colonial-style houses around and the windows on them practically begged for candles! Go for it! They look pretty from the inside too, especially behind a sheer/not-so-opaque curtain.

The other thing I do is seasonal cloth napkins. They don't take up much room to store and they change the look of the table without requiring you to store dishes or decorations. I have some red ones that I put out for Valentine's Day/Christmas, some spring-y colored ones for Easter, and some multicolored ones for fun (mostly birthdays and dinner parties).

wow so many good ideas! You could always use fresh garland and wreaths that can be composted with the tree at the end of the Christmas season. I too only have a few neighbors that see my wreath but I just love the smell of it in the hallway.

@LindsayInNY: What about apothecary jars? I have those on my mantle and I change what is in them based on the season. So, right now I have mini pumpkins. I also dress up our table for the season. I'll post pics as an example.

@Cole: I love the thought of pillow covers/throw pillows.

These are all such great ideas! We are in a tiny apartment and I want so badly to make things more festive. In years past we have done tree in the living room (up on a side table), lights and garland around the picture windows in the living room and dining room. I would love to get a wreath and a door mat this year, but may wait until we are out of our apartment for that.

There are some amazing ideas on this thread! I agree with the idea of repurposing certain things throughout the year like filling vases or trays with various seasonal items. What about swapping out a few of your framed pictures with more seasonal prints? I have seen some great vintage ones on Pinterest.

If you coat dried fall leaves in modge podge the color will re-intensify. You could spread them on a table or shelf for a pretty fall decoration that would work through Thanksgiving and they are cheap enough that you could pitch them or flat enough that you could save them.

I also like having placemats or runners for the holidays-- although I tend to pick things that work at multiple times so cute red placemats that work for Valentine's Day or 4th of July or Christmas. Sometimes I grab single ones for plants too, I will gather a few potted plants together and put them all on a cute placemat and then add bows around the pots or candles etc.

Pillow covers for the couch might be good too, they would change the space a lot but not take up much room storage wise.

A window display. Homes around here aren't very big and coupled with the dark and dreary Swedish winter, it's typical to see beautiful, often lit up window displays.

What about doing an outline of a tree on the wall in lights? That's all over the place and really easy to do.

I personally haven't had a tree in about 10 years, so I am looking forward to having it again this year!. Another idea is an ornament tree, they're made from metal and you can put them on a table.

@LindsayInNY: we hang a wreath anyways! I don't care who else sees it. And, it's easy to store...we just hung a hook high up in one of the closets, and we hang the wreath there during off-seasonal times. We also put out a festive doormat. Again, it makes me happy, so I don't care who else sees it!

We also have a mini Christmas tree that we put on the kitchen table that we store in a Rubbermaid container. We decorate it with mini ornaments and garland. You could even put mini lights on it! I also love the vases idea. And we string twinkle lights across the windows so you can see them outside. I really like doing that, too. It's fun to see them coming home!

I'm a big fan of banners/garland strung over the fireplace, mirrors, or large frames. You can make it yourself or find some cute options on Etsy, and they store fairly flat.

I also like to add filler to pillar candles in large, clear vases or hurricanes. Cheap options are beans or anything in the bulk containers, in season appropriate colors {layered orange/brown for Thanksgiving, red/green for Xmas}. They're so cheap that you can just toss them when you're done.

@LindsayInNY: One year I cut out bats from black card stock and taped a flock of them to the front door* of our apartment. I also hot glued some to an embroidery hoop wrapped in black ribbon and hung it from the ceiling.

*The bats on the door were a last minute addition since some punks decided to draw a penis on our door and we had small children living across the hall. The little girls across the hall adored the camouflage and they didn't see what we were trying to cover up. .

It's good to have some items that can serve as a base for holiday decor, but are versatile enough to remain. We have some decorative mason jars that are out all year, and "dress up" for the holidays. For Halloween, I wrap them with gauze and stick googly eyes on them, to turn them into mummies. Around Thanksgiving, some red and orange glass pebbles. For Christmas, I have sparkly, styrofoam ornaments on sticks that fit perfectly.

You can fill large vases with various twinkle lights to match the season, or invest in small decorative items for your shelves and tabletops. Switch out your throw pillows for a nice effect. Candles go a long way, too!

I think I have like 1 storage bin for Christmas. Maybe not even that much. But I don't do a tree because of cats. I hang my ornaments in my window instead and it looks magical enough. And then I decorate my record player and the wall behind it. I also do have green glass vases all throughout the house that I sometimes fill with pinecones. Sometimes....

ETA: I know I need to get 2 more stockings. I will get to it. Oh and we have lots of vintage Christmas records around.

@LindsayInNY: I fill vases (reused from my wedding) with ornaments. I do gold at Christmas time but you could do other colors for other holidays. I used the round ornaments and got them cheap at target (like $5) so it wouldn't be a big deal if they broke, or I couldn't store them. Pinecones would be cool! Flowers during the spring .... You could make tissue poms or some other crafty thing?

@honeybear: I grew up doing candles on the window sill. I'm going to have to see if I can convince DH to do it. We're on the 4th floor of our building so it will be harder to see but I like the idea anyways! I like a wreath but, again, same issue with the 4th floor. Only us and the people across the hall will see it. =/

I string up twinkle lights around window frames and put electric candles on the sill. I hang stockings off the bookshelves and paper garlands near doorways. I like those big red bows on doors because they take up less room than wreaths and they're cheap. I saw someone "wrap" their door like a present once and it looked great. I tried a wall decal tree when LO was in his cruising-and-pulling-stuff-down phase. It was much nicer than I'd expected (and baby-proof). We're in an apartment, so all of my holiday decor has to fit in one big Rubbermaid box or the recycling bin!

I want to start decorating more for the holidays. Only problem is the lack of storage space that we have. It's easier to decorate with smaller items or disposable ones - like pumpkins, Christmas tree/garland, etc.

Give me decorating ideas that don't require a ton of storage!!
