As a teacher I think it is great when the class gets together and gets a gift card for a massage or something like that. I would much rather have one nice gift than a bunch of small things that I don't have a use for. I also like starbucks gift cards! That being said, I don't really expect any gifts and I certainly don't expect every family to get something and spend bunch a money...even just a thoughtful card is nice.

When I worked at bath and body works a lot of the moms would come in and purchase teacher gifts. Usually not the pre made gift sets but something like hand soap or hand sanitizers.

@sandsandmore: If Baby T had more than 1 day care provider, I couldn't afford it! I'm going to ask DH and my mom about it before I go ahead. An extra week's pay seems huge!

I really want to make sure that I recognize her work with DS and that we appreciate all she does (that is part of the point of the season) but I don't feel like I know her well enough to do something less monetary and more personal. Maybe just a holiday card expressing our gratitude and thanks would be enough. I don't really like the expectation of a monetary or material gift to express thanks. She's a great day care provider but at the same time, she's just doing what we pay her to do.

But I also wouldn't want to be the only to not give something. I'm so bad navigating situations like this....

Like @mediagirl, I'm always surprised to read about what, to me, seems like mandatory gift giving. When I was a kid, we didn't give daycare teachers gifts -- when did this become the norm? On my local boards people have posted about giving their nannies one weeks pay. Um, sorry, I can't afford that; besides that total would be more than I spent on gifts for my son or my husband. I love my nanny, but I'm not funding her Christmas shopping.

@mrstilly: I am giving $50 gift cards to all the teachers. I think that is a good amount where they can get something decent for themselves at any store.

I'm wondering what to get our day care provider. Baby T is in an in-home day care and the woman and her husband are farmers in more rural upstate NY. I think Gift Cards would be iffy, unless it was to Walmart (but I Hate Walmart!). She usually has an array of baked goodies already, and I'm not good in the kitchen. I think I might just put some extra cash in with her weekly check.
If you are giving cash/gift cards what is a good amount? I was thinking $40 or $50? Keep in mind we are rural and pay about half of what parents pay for day care in urban/suburban areas.

I have a live in nanny that I love like a little sister! She has family in California (we're in NYC) and I offered to pay for a ticket out there for her to spend Thanksgiving or Xmas with them but they don't really get along. For Xmas so far I got her a Kate Spade bag, a LV scarf (she always jokes she is going to steal mine! haha) and I think I'm going to buy her skydiving lessons. She always talks about doing this with her bf so I thought I'd get them a package but I'm scared because I don't know what my son would do without her! I need the company to guarantee me she'll be ok! :)

Monetary gifts are the best (Starbucks gift cards, Target, restaurants, etc.), followed by school supplies stuff.

I was a student teacher for a couple of classrooms and the teachers I knew weren't fans of goodies (they got SO MANY cookies/treats, it wasn't healthy at all), cutesy themed things, and generic gift sets (like "spa themed" loofahs and body washes and stuff).

I just started a new thread about this same topic on the holiday board. Sorry about that.

One thing I'm considering is an ornament. We had pro pics done this month of our baby partly for Christmas cards. It looks like Mpix.com has an ornament that could be a decent idea.

Our day care actually sent out a note last year telling us to give something personal to the teachers so not classroom supplies. I think classroom supplies are definitely a good idea once kids are school age though!

@Looch: I can assure you that most homemade baked goods go straight in the trash. Our district actually doesn't allow homemade baked goods for things like holiday parties and birthday treats for this very reason. You are allowed to bring them as a gift to the teacher if you'd like but it's discouraged and most won't get consumed.

Those are great suggestions, EEH! Home baked goods gross me out unless I know the giver really well, the stuff just gets tossed in the trash. I would hate to throw away all of that hard work, especially if the little ones helped.

As a teacher the best gift I can receive is something off my classroom wishlist. If those things aren't provided I have to pay for them out of my own pocket because of budget cuts. I would recommend asking the teacher if they have a classroom wishlist and going from there. A lot of the things can be found really cheap or even bought with coupons. Examples include: ziploc bags, stickers, printer paper (this one is H.U.G.E! We always run out of paper around March), snacks for a younger class, dry erase markers, kleenex, etc.

You could also personalize it by including a nice handmade card from your little one.

Teachers will appreciate the acknowledgement of all the hard work they put into teaching your kids. I've taught for years, just not this year, and for two of those years it was in a very poor community. Gifts are not an expectation.

If you want to give something, giftcards are great (which could be bought with your points-free gift!), so are boxes of chocolate and tea of coffee if you know what she drinks. Do you bake? Cookies are wonderful, because she may not have enough time to do her own Christmas baking. Any other handiworks? A pair of mittens would be appreciated at recess.

I hate thinking about all of the gifts that people find necessary to give to teachers/day care workers/etc. I have read on some boards that people spend over $100 on all of the teachers. I'm flabbergasted by that! If we gift anything to teachers, it will be homemade and cheap like a plate of cookies or a homemade pack of greeting cards. Especially if we're paying $1400/mo to send a little one to daycare!!!

It's getting to be that time of year again! My daughter goes to day care so I give holiday gifts for all the teachers who take care of her. This can really add up since they work in shifts and there are part-time helpers in addition to full-time staff. Last year I gave gifts to 10 teachers!

We already pay a pretty high cost for tuition but it's still nice to show some kind of gratitude for the people who take great care of my daughter. Last year I put together gift bags with chocolate, cookies, and a gift card.

Will you be giving out holiday gifts to your child care provider? If so, what will you be giving?
