I'm also in the northeast and it would be odd here not to serve alcohol of some kind, though our group of friends also byob in general. One thing I sometimes do that might work for you is to make a non-alcoholic punch and have booze on the side that people can add if they choose. I've done cranberry based punch with prosecco (italian sparkling white wine), mulled apple cider with spiced rum and a tropical fruit punch with infused vodka. All very festive and cost conscious!

People love goat cheese stuffed proscuitto wrapped dates! It's so easy, my 2.5 year old literally made them last year. Also little smokies wrapped with pillsbury crescent rolls.

I live in the Northeast and have never been to a party (even a kids bday party) where there wasn't at least beer available, so I think beer and and wine would be expected if you are hosting any sort of holiday party. If you don't want extras I would figure 2 beers per male and a bottle of wine for every 3 women. Have fun!

Prosciutto wrapped asparagus is super easy and good! If you want a quick dessert costco has great cream puffs in their freezer section.

Thanks everyone!

@sorrycharlie: @blackbird: @Mrs. Lemon-Lime: meatballs seem to be the winner!

@Mrs. Lovejoy: I love the mini pot pies from TJs! Seriously, so good.

@Mrs. Lemon-Lime: that's true. Our wedding was even alcohol free but all of our friends seem to drink a lot here! I think it's more the cultural norm opposed to where we used to live. We don't mind having booze around but it's definitely something I hate spend $100 on.

@luckypenny: Here is another app idea- Brazilian cheese bread. Sounds exotic, but they are really easy to make!

@luckypenny: A friend brought these to a party a few months ago and they were a big hit! http://gourmetgirl1.blogspot.com/2007/11/mascarpone-filled-medjool-dates.html

For drinks, I would just keep it simple with beer and wine. Maybe 3 bottles of red, 2 of white and a 12 pack of beer? Or just don't serve any alcohol and if people ask what to bring then tell them to bring wine to share!

Maybe just some beer?

Meatballs, I like taking deli meat and rolling them into crescent Rolls with cheese. Yummy and cheap!

If you don't drink then don't serve alcohol nor ask guests to BYOB. It's not a big deal to hang out without booze. However, I would serve something more fun than just soda and iced tea. Fizzy fruity punch!

My recent one-bite warm app winner was meatballs in the cockpit 1 part jelly, 1 part spicy BBQ sauce.

Oh and here's our go-to recipe for something unique but easy and delicious

Prosciutto Palmiers

1 Sheet Puff pastry, thawed
2 t Dijon mustard
4 t (1T and 1t) honey
2.5 ounces sliced prosciutto
3 T grated parmesan
1 egg yolk beaten with 1T water

Preheat oven to 375 degrees.

Roll pastry to a 6 x 14 inch rectangle. Trim uneven edges with knife. (You may have to 'glue' a few pieces together. It's all good.)

Combine mustard and honey and brush over pastry. Cover with proscuitto and sprinkle with 2T parmesan.

Tightly roll the long side of the pastry half way to the middle, and do the same with the other side to meet up in the middle of the pastry. Refrigerate until firm, about 20 minutes.

Brush the pastry with egg wash on both sides. Cut into 1/2 inch thick slices. Place slice on greased baking sheet. (I use parchment to make life easier.) Bake until crisp and golden, about ten minutes. Remove from the oven and immediately sprinkle remaining parmesan over the palmiers. Transfer to a wire rack to cool. Serve warm or at room temperature.

I highly suggest using freshly grated parmesan instead of the Kraft stuff. Trader Joe's has very well priced prosiutto, as well as parmesan, and they usually have puff pastry during the holidays. Keep an eye on the the bottom of the palmiers as they tend to brown faster because the sugar from the honey seeps to the bottom while cooking...if that makes sense. (If they are burning on the bottom before the top is golden, reduce your oven temp.)

I just hosted my book club & did a glazed butternut squash tart recipe I think I found here. It was good! And not that hard to make. You could cut them into bites.

I also did tomato roasted red pepper soup shooters with mini breadsticks, and apple slices with caramel dip.

Trader joes has great frozen app options that you can make in the oven! Also, you could pick up some affordable wine and a case of beer, and I'd say your good! BYOB shouldn't offend people either.

A lot of our family and friend parties are byob. But usually some beer is provided but most of DH's friends bring along a case of their own.

Meatballs are a great one bite app: someone else suggested bacon wrapped Medjool dates on another thread and they're a perfect fancy appetizer!

What about some mini sandwiches or tomato mozzarella sticks?

My go to warm app is sweet & sour meatballs. Easy to throw in crockpot and SO YUM.

However much you want to make, one part grape jelly (not jam!) to one part chili sauce. Let mix a bit then I add meatballs (frozen are fine..and easier imo!).

We are hosting a holiday party for all our new friends. Party starts at 5pm and is for 20 adults and 10 toddlers. Thinking about a big charcuterie, cheese, and fruit plates and a few warm appetizers.

What are some good small "one bite" appetizer ideas? Also, we don't drink. I'm happy to provide some alcohol but hate spending a bunch of money on booze that we don't even drink. Is it totally rude to make it BYOB? If yes, how much alcohol or what kind do we need? I'm hoping since everyone is bringing their kids we can count on them not drinking too much ;)
