haha. I already know about Newport. We lived right by the Starbucks when we first moved here....well, DH lived there for 2 months or so, I was just there the last 2 weeks with him. We didn't have any trouble with the cooking smells on our floor, but that was a complaint other people had regularly.

My husband is Sri lankan, so he wouldn't mind those smells....unless it got into our apartment or something. But right now, with my morning sickness...I can't say I'm a fan of friend onions or curry.

@Anagram - We're just south of Newport now (waterfront area) and were in Paulus Hook before. I don't know much about Hamilton Park but I don't think it's as accessible to the PATH (it's a bit of a walk). Paulus Hook has some gorgeous brownstones as well as larger managed buildings. I think you could get a good deal on a brownstone since the larger managed buildings tend to come at a price (for the amenities). There are a lot of moms in the neighborhood too! The waterfront is nice as well, but the closer you get to Newport, the larger of an Indian population you'll encounter (I smell various spices in my hallway almost daily, they have their extended family over on weekends which makes building community space scarce). I've lived in Jersey City for 4 1/2 years so let me know if you have any questions!!

@LindsayInNYC: What part of Jersey City? We're thinking about buying and are also looking at JC. We like the waterfront, Paulus Hooks, and Hamilton park areas.

My building suggested tipping $200 or so collectively and they would distribute it among concierge and maintenance. I'm giving nothing. The first year we moved in, we gave a little since we moved in July. Last year and now this year nothing because they've done nothing to deserve a gift/tip. They are the worst concierge EVER! They literally just accept packages and log them into the computer system. The weekday evening guy NEVER greets me. I can count on one hand the number of times someone has held the door for me when my hands are full. Instead, they will sit there and watch you struggle with the door. I don't know if they treat owners versus renters different or what...

(@Anagram - Part of that might answer your question. I'm in Jersey City and my doormen sound kinda like what you described, except the pleasant part)

I need help on this: So we live in a high rise building in Hoboken. living in jersey, I'm going to assume tipping expectations are a bit lower that NYC. However, our building is part of a large management group that owns/manages several buildings. I'm not even sure we have a super just for this building. We *seem* to have a maintenance crew that goes around to all the buildings, but to be honest, I'm not sure...because I've never seen them. They once fixed our door, but it was during the work day when we were out.

They seem to have hired more door staff just in the past week or so, but I don't know them at all. There are 2 door guys we see often and like, and two pleasant-enough guys that seem to just work weekends. However, they don't actually open doors--they sit at the front desk and accept packages, buzz people in, etc. We have a normal amount of packages, I guess.

So, should I tip the doormen only, since I don't know the super and don't know if we have one? In jersey, for door guys that sit at a desk and accept packages and are pleasant, but don't do much else---what would you tip?

Thanks!!!!

@Alivoo01: Not really. :) Our folks are really just people who sit at a desk. They primarily are there for part security, part accepting packages, part telling us when we have visitors, and part looking out for the building in general. Trust me. It's not that fancy (at least not in my case anyway). Some buildings in NY are very fancy (think Park Avenue), but it really varies widely.

Do you happen to know if the residents in your building do any kind of group tip? One of the buildings I lived in did this, although we tipped separately because DH was the staff's boss. Any tip would be better than a gift, probably!

Yup. Same here. DH and I just started to talk about this yesterday. There aren't many buildings like this in Brooklyn as there are in Manhattan, but we just happen to live in one. There is an interesting article about this but it's from an NYC perspective. Here's the link: http://www.brickunderground.com/blog/2009/11/the_first_annual_brickunderground_guide_to_holiday_tipping
I guess just adjust the numbers? I know Atlanta is very different.

The holiday tipping can be a bit of a minefield, but I have to admit that our doormen/concierges/porters like us and treat us well. One just came up here earlier this week just to change our smoke detector, and we didn't even ask him. He suggested it. One also has been displaced since Sandy, and we've went to his home last year. He's a great guy that I don't mind helping out this Christmas.

We tipped the following:

Doormen, Front Desk Concierge & Super $100 each
Maintenance & Security $50 each

We got holiday cards from the building staff with their names and pictures every year so we knew exactly who we were tipping. There were about 25 people to tip... It adds up, so we saved during the year for it. And for our first Christmas there, we still tipped in full because we were really tipping for the upcoming year.

How much do you plan on tipping your doorman, concierge, etc.?

We have no idea how many concierges there are in total, but only 2 of them are competent and know us by name. So we plan on just giving them tips/gifts.
