@Mrsbee yes we give the super $300. We also have security which in a lot of buildings is the doorman duty. So we tip security $150 each. Elevator operator gets $50 because she is so sweet :)

wow some big tippers here!

i think we tipped $200/each to the two doormen in our last doorman building (we got a lot of packages), and we didn't give anything to the couple of doormen we rarely saw.... oops?

this is what nymag had to say:

There are two things to consider when you're determining how much to give. The first is building size -- the smaller the building, the larger your bonus should be. The second is the level of luxury. Lawrence Vitelli of Insignia Residential Group, which manages some of the highest-priced properties in the city, says supers at its big buildings routinely get between $100 and $300 from each tenant, and at small buildings, $500 to $1,000 is not unheard of. But chances are you won't have to shell out that much. For most buildings, $30 to $50 is appropriate for doormen, $50 to $100 for supers. Support staff like handymen and elevator operators are in the $20-to-$30 range.

Since you have so many and if none really stand out to your for service I would just give 10 envelopes with $50 each. Doorman buildings are very confusing! In Harlem I gave the homeless guy a dollar not to pee in my building so I guess that was my introduction to tipping haha :)

Any more suggestions on tip rates for 2011? Doormen? $50-100.

I only ask because some of the doormen, I barely know. Also if you tip some more than others, do you think those people get resentful? I dunno, this seems way more complicated than I thought.

I have befriended many a doorman, and the one thing I learned is that they know exactly who has tipped them and exactly how much each tip was. And if you don't tip them, then they will never forget it.

I was surprised at how personal it all was. Then one doorman I knew said that tipping was half of his income! No wonder so many doormen get (passive) aggressive about it. Anyway that dynamic got to me after a while... I was happy when I moved back into a walkup apartment.

When I lived in the city our doormen had a little box on the front desk where you could leave something for them to split equally. We usually did $200 to the pot. Like ecogirl said you can also give individually if you feel like a particular door man goes above and beyond.

I wrote this response for a previous post a while back (with some edits):

Re tipping doormen, other building staff, etc - this is what my husband and I do. We live in a high-rise rental building in Midtown Manhattan. Our tipping is average for the building. Many tip more, but i'm not sure about less. Tipping is expensive in nyc - especially when you live in a building with a lot of people who maintain it:

Doormen: $100 each (we have 6 different doormen)
Porters: $50 each
Maintenance Guy: $50
Super: $150
Garage attendant: $50

I put the money in an envelope and attach to a small box of chocolates. I was advised that if possible, give each person their tip directly to ensure they receive it. My building provides a list of names of everyone who maintains our building for our convenience.

Total holiday tipping for us in the building will run about $1,200. Freaking expensive!!!

We have three doormen and tip two $50 and the other $100. That is because one of them goes and above and beyond all the time for us. I also give them the tips individually with a little card and box of cookies I make.

This is a little off topic, but I'd love to get some advice from HB readers. I am a new transplant to NYC, so I'm not used to this whole holiday tipping for doormen. What are some basic guideline and expectations? Our building is pretty large with probably 10 doormen rotating shifts.

What's a realistic amount to tip each of them?
