@blackbird: Oh man, some of his customers definitely give more than $50! Treats are *always* appreciated too! As a Carrier's daughter, we prefer fudge ;)

@swurlygurl: I'm guessing it's not enforced....a gov't employee is a gov't employee to me! The policy states 2012, though:

"All postal employees, including carriers, must comply with the Standards of Ethical Conduct for Employees of the Executive Branch. Under these federal regulations, carriers are permitted to accept a gift worth $20 or less from a customer per occasion, such as Christmas. However, cash and cash equivalents, such as checks or gift cards that can be exchanged for cash, must never be accepted in any amount. Furthermore, no employee may accept more than $50 worth of gifts from any one customer in any one calendar year period."

Meh ;) Who's going to turn down cash? I know it's a *big* problem where I work, so I'm sort of hyper aware of the whole government employee kickback issue. Cliff gets treats from the Blackbird household :)

I give my cleaner a week's pay. I gave the super and porter last year ($50 and $25, respectively) but after some issues this year, won't be. I usually don't for my colorist because her rate is SO high to begin with that the tip already is high.

I don't for the mailman because our condo complex gives him a large cash gift...

Super, building porter and doormen $50 each
Cleaning crew: $50
Daycare teachers $25 gcs plus baked goods and other small gifts
So much money, I'm broke already!

I already gave my mailman a $20 Starbucks gift card, and a nice note and a hug ;) I read up on it there is a limit and no cash. He hand deliverers our mail thru a slot on our house. I should do more for him during the year.

I tip my housecleaners 50% of a service. I could do more.

If I get my hair cut in Demeber I may tip an extra $5-10

@blackbird: Huh... My dad is Mailman (Letter Carrier, I guess), and he's always received a ton of tips. All the other Carriers do, and they even split their tips with their Subs. I wonder if it's a new rule, or just one not generally enforced? I do know that other Government employees aren't allowed to accept gifts... one of the Government contractors I was working with had to send a pencil back from a brochure we sent them because it counted as a gift... haha!

Daycare lady and housekeeper we tip their weekly pay.

Our mail carrier just changed otherwise I'd consider tipping her.

@Mrs. Lemon-Lime: I would think the tech? At least in other industries, I think it is common not to tip the owner?

@Mrs. Bee: Yeah, from what I'm reading, it sounds like that's about right. My husband might not be on board with that... he will probably want to give $25 or 30, but we want to keep her happy.... so, we'll see!

I usually get a haircut in December and my stylist gets an extra tip.
@blackbird: You're right. I know my mom usually gives the mail carrier a physical gift, like one year she have the mail carrier a Tervis tumbler.

I will be tipping our two babysitters, more like a bonus, and offering a small gift.

I don't think it's done here to tip the mail carrier. I never see him unless he delivers packages and the mailman is not the same person as the package deliverer.

As for school, my son has 2 teachers and there are 2 other teachers who often help with the older kids. I was thinking a small box of chocolate for each. I would feel really weird about giving them money or gift cards, I don't think the notion of tipping is really in the culture here other than at restaurants.

Great timing!

My cleaning crew comes tomorrow. There's usually 2-3 people that come any given time.

I want to give my Dunking Donuts lady a GC because she makes the best coffee! Truly she is as an asset over there.

I haven't before, but maybe this year I'll tip the pool guy. Does it go to the tech who comes to my house? Or the owner who I have a relationship with?

There are a few other services, but they are new and truly the giving/ gifting would not be from the heart.

i tipped our cleaning lady $15 on top of the $60 we pay her monthly. i think i read that a weekly rate is a good tip... but i probably wouldn't do that for a daycare! :)

charlie's class and olive's class chips in for a group gift card, but I'm also going to give a little something extra.

i'll also be tipping our ups guy (we get a lot of deliveries), mailman (he is very nice!), and our building super.

We have a nanny/babysitter who helps my husband with our daughter 2 nights a week, for about 2 hours each time. We pay her $70-80/week. She's been with us for a little over a year. Trying to figure out the appropriate amount to tip her.

Also our mail carrier? I have totally forgotten what we tipped her last year!

What about daycare workers? My LO has 3 teachers in her room of 10 kids. I will probably go with gift cards... what's a good amount?

Thanks!
