My dad got a lot of gifts/tips because he had the same route every day, and he did a lot for his customers (would add postage when they were short, deliver mail to their door during bad weather so they didn't have to go out, deliver mail to the door of older people, remembered everyone's names, etc). If you are on a temp/training route, common practice is to share gifts - they do a good job of splitting what they communicably receive. Is money better than a gift or is it the thought that counts? </p>
