I have s couple I've done for my son every year, workimg on getting my husband and step-daughters on board.

I buy an ornament every year representing something they like.

I also buy pj's and they open them Christmas Eve, my son isn't so happy about it anymore he'd rather open a toy on Christmas
Eve, lol.

We go to the waterfront and watch the Christmas Ships

And I thoight everyone did stockings until I met my husband, he looked at me like I had a third eye! I also get a get from under the tree crammed in, lol. I stuff them with scratch-it's ;)

I started my son's ornament collection, the theme is snowflakes, as he was born in December. His 2010 one is a crystal Waterford one, his 2011 is blue and white Wedgewood. I did this to coordinate with my silver sleigh bells collection. I figure his future wife wouldn't mind having these ornaments, lol.

My MIL is currently making his advent calendar. It's 25 knitted socks, mittens and hats in coordinating yarn (baby blue, white, light gray and dark gray). I designed it to coordinate with his ornaments. As far as the stocking goes, we have a huge PBK one for now, but we don't have any family stockings. I am thinking about knitting some, but haven't found the time.

@Nodakademic - Hubs' parents gave him his big box a few months ago since we didn't have room for it before. There are a lot of john deere tractors and baseball related ornaments in there and I have no idea what to do with them! Maybe I could hang a garland and hang those on it? Help!

For us, we buy one or two ornaments a year and this year I'd like to find a duck themed ornament for the baby we lost. We will probably do ornaments for our little ones when the time is right.

@duetletterpress Oooo, I forgot about advent calendars! We did these when I was a kid too. I definitely want to do that for future children; I loved opening the little doors!

@NODAKADEMIC - as a couple, we do an ornament each year too. it's a fun tradition we'll continue. we also do stockings + an advent calendar. we'll incorporate em into those traditions as well since she's old enough now.

also, i understand the ornament hesitation. i have lots of ornaments that i inherited too. and i've yet to put them up. to be fair, we have only a small table top tree. maybe we'll get a larger tree next year in addition to the tabletop one.

Also: I really like the buying-an-ornament-for-each-kid every year tradition, but I'd be hesitant to do it for this reason: when you get to be 25 or so your mom will clean her basement and give you all your ornaments and then you'll have a box of like, teddy bear and disney ornaments from 20 years ago and not know what to do with it. I um, might have this problem. Hah!

As a couple, Mr. N and I get an ornament each year we have been together. We try to get one that represents something from that year. (This year's is a mini lobster-pot we got on a vacation to maine; the year before is a glass starfish to represent our honeymoon; the year before that is a Key shape that says "our first christmas in our new house;" etc.) We plan to keep doing this, so I'm sure a lot of the future ornaments will represent something kid-related.

My family also does christmas stockings, but Mr. N's did not when he was growing up. I have been trying to get him in to the tradition (I want to do it with our kids too) but he's still learning. (So each year, he gets a stocking filled with fun little trinkets, and I get one of my christmas presents he has taken from under the tree and crammed in the stocking...hahaha. It's adorable.)

It started when we were little kids, so we would out-grow them. It was never any secret that my dad was the Christmas Bunny. Sometime around when I graduated from high school, I think he started to feel weird about buying his adult daughter things to sleep in and switched to an Old Navy gift card and a little silly toy. (I wish he hadn't! Lounge pants and a comfy top would do me fine.)
But yes, my mom gets a sexy nightie every year from The Christmas Bunny- so she's got a ton :) My husband took over last year and bought me cute Sesame Street pjs.

Ok, so my family is totally bizarre and we have a thing called The Christmas Rabbit. The Christmas Rabbit brings everyone pajamas. I never realized how weird this was until I tried to explain it to a friend in college, but I love it!
We have a million holiday traditions, but that's probably our most unique one.

i was planning to do something with the ornaments as well. i remember when i used to watch days of our lives, i loved how they have an ornament with the names of each family member, but i doubt we'll have such a big family to be able to do that. maybe decorate the tree together. haven't really had a chance to really think that far ahead. but will look to see what everyone else responds with and maybe i can build upon that.

We're Jewish, so I think we'll make one present each year Chanukah /Jewish related. That way her collection will grow and she'll eventually have a nice menorah, dreidle, etc. This year will be a Chanukah board book and CD.

We'll also do the traditional latkas, light the menorah every night, all that good stuff. And of course Chinese food on Christmas! When she gets older we'll go to a theme park for Christmas like we always did when I was growing up.

DH and I started a family ornament tradition that we will of course continue when babies are here.

We live about an hour away from Bronners, the 365 day Christmas Theme store. They have everything and anything Christmas-related and customize a lot of their pieces.

We have a big, adult tree and a smaller one that we've fashioned with our family mementos and keepsake ornaments, which we will supersize as the number of ornaments increases! :)

My Mom did (still does) the ornament thing every year. I think when our LO is born, we'll move all of my childhood ornaments to another tree and make our family room tree one just for our family and decorative ones I find.

As for traditions? We'll probably just do the ones that we did as kids. Christmas Eve service, so we don't have to go Christmas Day. Milk and cookies for Santa, carrot for Rudolph. Driving around to find the craziest Christmas light display we can find. :)
