@regberadaisy: Yup! It can take us 2 hours to get to the airport too, if it's right before a holiday weekend. And we have to get there so early because the airports are not designed for the traffic they get and the lines are ridiculously long and take hours to get through. By the time we get on the plane it's already been about 4 hours of traveling and at that point we're lucky if the plan takes off on time! It takes us 11 hours to drive, but we can leave when we want, pack as much as we want, stop when we want, etc.

@Modern Daisy: this is exactly why we drive!!! With NYC airports a hour flight after checking in, etc can easily turn into a 5 hour endeavor. You have to get to the airport an hour early at least and probably more with a LO. Then the flights never leave on time and you're stuck waiting at the terminal for a good 15-30 minutes. Then by the time we drive to my brother's house.

And we can't all fit in my brother's cars any more so having our own car is helpful to get around.

Haha I am in the same situation! My IL's live near Detroit and we usually drive out there for holidays but now are thinking about how to approach it wiht a new baby.

Our plan is to fly out for Christmas since we're only taking a week off and driving burns two full days (with an infant it might even be 4 full days if we have to spend the night halfway). But in the future, if we take a 2 week vacation out there we'll definitely drive. Driving is waaay nicer than flying especially out of the NYC airports. Our flights are always delayed, we aren't even treated as good as prisoners are and it's super expensive - esp during the holidays. So it comes down to us paying $1K for two round trip tickets, not being able to pack anything we need for the week and having the entire trip start to finish only take slightly less time than driving would have.

@littlebug: I gert his fear, but honestly 2 hours is such a short flight, easily doable with a 10 month old, especially an 'easy' baby. The white noise on flights does wonders, plus you can always time it to coincide with a nap and babywear as needed. Driving just takes forever IMO.

I really think you should fly because if you drive you might not make it in time for dinner and you'll be exhausted. We've done both at various ages but even with the hassle of all an airport entails it is almost always the better choice. The cost savings have to be really huge for us to drive.

@littlebug: Depending on the length of the trip, we will usually either leave a few hours before bedtime or super early in the morning. So, leave at 4-5, stop for dinner/LO playtime, then back in the car for her to go to sleep whenever she wants. Or we load up and leave at 2-3AM.

I was terrified of being that family with the screaming kid too, but surprisingly, the white noise of the airplane engine drowned it out!

@littlebug: My fam is ~7 hours away and we always drive. We leave around bedtime and she sleeps most of the way. We vastly prefer driving and it's cheaper!

@regberadaisy: We would drive the 2 hours to my parents' house Wednesday night, then we all get up at like 4am Thursday to drive to Ann Arbor.

@Weagle: Hmm...driving through the night is actually not a bad idea. He'd sleep the entire way. This is definitely something to talk about!

Drive. Drive at night while baby is sleeping. Anything under 12-13 hours is in the car for us, usually. It's totally the easiest way for us to travel

What's the cost of gas vs airfare totals?

I put this in NBR, even though it kind of is. Not sure where to put it. ANYWHO. This Thanksgiving, we are hoping that I can get the time off from work to go out to Ann Arbor, MI to visit my relatives. We are in PA. D will be 10 months old. We usually drive out with my parents, but that means a 2-hour drive Wednesday night to my parents' house, then an 8.5-hour drive to Ann Arbor (likely made significantly longer due to stops for D to eat). I am thinking we should fly - hour train ride to airport, 2-hour flight, hour drive from Detroit to Ann Arbor. We would fly Thursday morning, rather than Wednesday, as our experience is Thursday is MUCH less busy!

FWIW, D is a very "easy" baby - has slept well (ie, STTN) since 5 weeks old, and is pretty flexible when it comes to eating/sleeping schedule changes when necessary. That being said, he also doesn't totally love being in his car seat. So I think we should fly. But Hubs is pretty anti-flying-with-baby and thinks we should drive.

What would you recommend?
